Im not sure what is specd for this car..is it back specd to 0w20 or stick with 5w20? Will be alot of cold starts in Montreal from now til Spring. Not garaged nor plugged in. All recommendations appreciated. Its a friends car, and oil is very dark..he just bought it..so no idea when it last got changed...so im thinking of going either Mobil 1 5w20 or TGMO 0W20 with a fram ultra..hoping the Ultra is able to hold/pick up all left behind dirt from last oil change..no idea when it was last done..i know not to judge by color but its clearly dirty..

If you think it's grungy inside, I'd just use Pennzoil Conventional 5w20 with a cheap filter and change it in 2-3k miles. After that any 0W-20 or 5W-20 synthetic should be fine. But if you start getting leaks w synthetic, go back to dino or MaxLife.

+1.....agree. This engine needs cleaning. No use in wasting top tier oil and filters to accomplish that. Pennzoil Conventional is a good cleaning oil, so use it for 2 to 3k with a cheap filter....and then go to a top-tier oil (M-1, or PP) and a Fram Ultra filter.

If your spec oil is 5w20.....you can use 0w20 without worry. It should give you even better start-up in that cold Montreal winter.

I use any brand name API SN 5W-20 in my 2007 Accord V6 (7th generation from '03 to '07). My '07 has an oil life monitor - does the '02?

If your engine is rated for 5W-20 you can use 0W-20 with confidence. Winter starts will just be a little easier. Don't really think you need a synthetic though.
