2002 Ford Explorer with Schaeffer's All Trans ATF

I dropped the transmission pan on my 63,000 mile 2002 4.0L V6 Ford Explorer, replaced the filter and put in 12 quarts of Schaeffer's All Trans Supreme ATF. Very odd smell to it, sorta like fish.

Anyway, while the transmission has given me no trouble and it shifts well, it shifts noticeably smoother with the Schaeffer's, IMHO. The All Trans appears to be a very high quality synthetic "sleeper" ATF.

It exceeds both. It is very good stuff. Expensive, but good. And yes, it does smell like fish. When I first changed out to it at 25k it eliminated some 1-2 WOT shift shudder which hasnt returned.
Although that inst surprising the way I have it rigged to slam the intermediate clutch on. kekeke.

Weird that smell, no? In any case I do not think that only licensed fluids need to be used, although in the case of Schaeffer's All Tran it does have a Mercon V (license id # M000807). I wanted a full synthetic fluid in the transmission, and given the light use the truck now gets, this is first and last change of the ATF fluid.

According to MolaKule from a previous #204 thread:

It is now a majority GroupIII oil, so the oxidation numbers should be good.

The esters used to carry the friction modification package and the phosphorous AW is the fishy odor you detect. Those special FM's to me smell like chalk dust, and when compounded with the esters and the phos, they really stink.

The Schaeffers #204 S-AT is far superior to Toyota ATF that I have run in my 2000 Tundra. It saved the transmission from an early grave, and I can thank BITOG for leading me to it.

Yes, it does stink like dead fish!
