2002 Caddy Deville

Hi folks,

I have a friend who has a 2002 Cadillac Deville (base model, 275 HP) with the typical oil-burning Northstar. He's burning oil at the rate of 2000 miles/quart using Valvoline Synblend 5w30. He's uses this car for his limo business and it often sees at least a couple hundred miles a day.

I know this will be a tough one to answer... He's wondering if there might be some little tricks to reduce the oil burning such as changing oil weights, additives, etc. He's not willing to bring it to the dealer where GM will recommend the service that's at least $1500 with no guarantee that it will fix the problem. Any suggestions? Thanks everyone!

Make sure the PCV system is up to snuff and look for an oil with a low volatility score. I believe that yeat Nstar is spec'ed for 5w30, but all the older ones spec'ed 10w30. Switching may lower the consumption some.

use high mileage oil 10w30 that works for my cousin that has 180,000 on a northstar also northstars need to be opened up once in a while

Go Valvoline MaxLife 10w30 and top off with Valvoline 10w40 conventional.

"problem"? Is oil consumption a recent development perhaps indicative of a mechanical problem (e.g. PCV as mentioned) or is this normal for his particular motor. N* aggressive cross-hatch often results in unexpectedly high but normal consumption. WOT routine and deceleration in 2nd apparently works for some. FWIW my N* uses 2x the oil with Mobil 1 as it does on Quaker State Ultimate Durability. Not sure how I feel about that.

How many miles are on the unit? A lot, I imagine given that this is a limo.

I have heard of Northstars consuming at this rate from Day 1. It is not a problem.
