2001 Nissan Pathfinder P1134 code

I have a 2001 Pathfinder that has shown a P1134 code. My book shows this is a Variable timing sensor valve. There are two of the valves, one for each bank. According to my book it could also be a solenoid. I hate to take this car to a dealer.

My question is can this be repaired by a regular mechanic who does not normally work on this kind of engine. I hate to be chasing parts until the SES light finally goes out.

Any kind of directions/instructions for this repair will be greatly appreciated.

This is a P1145 code.

A quick search says that the P1145 is the left side timing control position sensor. They cost about $80 from the dealer, and don't sound to be particularly hard to change.
