I just replaced my factory fill with Amsoil.
The factory fill is GREY. I didn't take pics, no need, just picture GREY! and the plug had clay like gray substance.

Is this exposure to water? Is this normal????

Never had any problems with 4WD and this is the first fluid change at 92k, which is very early according to FMC, but I am changing the front and rear axle fluid for the heck of it. Rear was last done at 30k and never sees towing or sumbersion in water. BTW, the rear "looked" fine.

Whenever I've checked differential plugs when it's up in the mileage I have also seen this clay-like substance. I believe it is nothing more than metal shavings mixed with a little gear oil, so it's thick and gray.

I'm sure you'll be just fine, don't sweat it.

Is that the first time you drained/filled the front diff? Is so, I'm not surprized at your findings. Front diffs are typically forgotten items. Not sure why, but the newer independant front suspention diffs seem to beat up gear oil faster than the older solid fronts. The front gear oil in my trailblazer looked nasty @ 20Kmi and a 1.5yrs old.

yep, that's the first time I've changed it....just took her for a spin....I think i put a few oz too much in the rear end though...

^^^ According to the Chrysler service manual. the diff fluid should be about 1/2" below the level hole. Ford is probably the same. It's better to be a little on the low side than have aereated fluid.

I'll have to drive somehwere to find level ground lol.
started by putting in the 2.6L of fluid, plus 4oz FM, but couldn't feel it whatsoever, so i gave a few more pumps of the Amsoil and closed her up.

fyi

You do not need the FM on an open differential. It won't hurt but it is an unnecessary expense.

NOTE: AMSOIL Synthetic Gear Lubes do not require the use of this additive. Slip-Lock Differential Additive is formulated with advanced friction modifiers and is designed to eliminate gear-housing chatter in cars, trucks and SUVs equipped with limited-slip, posi-traction and locking differentials.

Thanks...I knew that in advance, but threw it in, it was like $5 adn won't hurt anything, like you said....I tell you one thing, this thing doesn't have one bit of chatter, especially turning a corner from a stop sign....
