Hello to everyone. First post. Just wanted input from people who know what they are talking about. I have a 2001 camry 2.2 liter with just over 94000k on odometer. Bought it with 40k a couple years ago. It runs great still as the day I bought it. Im just really concerned with all the news on this engine as well as other Toyota models as you know are prone to sludging up in reports. Been using pennz yellow bottle. Is it worth switching to a synthetic like pennz platinum to help pervent it? I noticed gold varnish on the oil cap on last oil change as well. Sorry if a thread like this exsists already.

it can never hurt to go full synthetic at all and get the added protection. since its really not that expensive ($20ish/5qt) which is only a few bucks more per oil change, and you can run an extended oil change interval, so it kind of pays for itself. i've run close to 10,000 on pennzoil platinum, and when i looked at the top of my camshafts, valve rockers, and valve cover, it was spotless.

as long as the oil changes have been kept in check, then conventional oil should work just fine too. not so much to worry about. also the gold varnish really isnt a big deal either.

I purchased a 4 yr old Ford Focus with 57K on it several years ago....that was serviced with dino since it was new.

I decided to switch to a synthetic (Valvoline SynPower 5W20). What shocked me was that a short time after I put the Syn in (about 1000K), the dip=stick was black (it was cleaning up the sludge). I changed the oil & filter at 2500K and refilled with Valvoline Syn again. It continued to clean out the sludge. I changed out the oil & filter at 4000K. My last OCI was at 7000K and the oil looked almost as clean as when I last filled it.

Said all this to encourage you to change over to a SYN ASAP...and clean out that sludge. SYN has the ability to do that very well.

PP would be an excellent choice.

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like its worth just going with the pennz platinum then. I dont see any sense of messing around. My vehicle does not leak any fluid of any kind thank God. So a switch to synthetic should be no problem correct? I change the oil every 2800 miles on camry and I enjoy doing it. Do you think I should use pennz ultra over the platinum? Is it worth the cost difference? Platinum goes for $20 & ultra is going for $28 at my local walmart. I just want the vehicle to run for a long time. I also use the pennz yellow in my Mustang GT 302 & no problems. I Think I will just switch them both over to platinum. My local napa dealer is telling me to use amsoil in the mustang which I wont consider cause I enjoy changing oil more often then not, as well as the amsoil at my napa is about $10 a quart. Any help on the questions asked in this post thanks in advance.

try castrol hm.. I have been using for 2 years. I am now over 8000 miles since my last oil changed..

the oil is not too dirty.. so I recommend castrol on the toyota engine.. I will even try castrol syntec on my pilot too..

When you switch to a SYN...you can do at least 5000...and maybe more...depending on your driving habits.

One of the major advantages of using a SYN...is extended OCI's. It would be a waste of money and good oil with an OCIn of 2800. Double that...and you should be OK and justify the extra $$ you pay for SYN over conventional.

well here is the reason..

2 years ago, I changed my oil at Pep Boys. Pep Boys using pennzoil HM. They suppose to put 4.5 quarts on the 2006 camry v6.. They put 6 quarts. Engine get noises at the idle.. 3000 miles later, I use walmart express lube....

try the ultra, i put it in 3500 miles ago in G5...go at least 8k with it though, it is a super premium oil

my in law has a camry pushing 300k and he rarely changes oil, once a year maybe and car still runs even though it is a oil burner thanks to his "maint" schedule...if it hadnt been for me putting oil in engine it wouldve died by now

and he uses cheapest oil he can find to put in...one time i added almost 3 qts of synthetic to put DS at full...it just goes to show what a waste of money 3k oil changes would be now

Driving habits are normal in camry different story in mustang. Whats your take on the platinum vs ultra? Ultra worth the extra money?

I don't know if synthetic is worth using in my camry.
High Mileage oil changed cost $35 @ walmart
Synthetic oil changed cost $55 @ walmart

my best was 33.5 mpg using castrol gtx hm.

I will probably do my oil changed at 9,000 miles. I never put synthetic oil in my car. conventional all the time..

any recommend switching to synthetic? will it leak? 183,000 miles..

On a Toyota? No.It is not a Ford, for God's sake.
If you are driving a mix of city&highway at least (even if not full time long distance driving) it is worth changing to synthetics.

You can change your own oil and filter and it will cost you around 30 dollars. Try Autozone or Advance Auto oil&filter specials.

You can get the Mobil 1 High Mileage Full Synthetic 5w-30 in a 5qt. jug at Wal-Mart for around $21. Let the synthetic clean that dino gunk out!

183,000 miles PROVES what you have been doing WORKS.

Why change?

Known sludger = frequent OCIS in my book with ANY oil. Syn does not get rid of the byproducts that NEED to be removed.
