I am going to try and change my oil myself for the first time. Rather than spending $225, I can do it for less than $100. My question is which oil to use. Now I know there are tons of data in here and read a good chunk of it. However, the confusion is based on the Porsche specs says 10w40 and lots in here are saying 0w40 or 5w40. The Mobil 1 site says 0w40 and Walmart has for $25.10. I am also considering Castrol Edge and Royal Purple.

If I want to go with 10w40, I only see it in high mileage and now sure of that is the way to go.

Know that I live in NJ and only drive the car in perfect weather over 50 degrees and less than 1k miles a year. The car is garaged.

I appreciate the help and opinion on the brand and viscosity.

Porsche says 5w-40 or 5w-50 above -13°F, and 0w-40 for all temperatures.

At the Walmart price point, Mobil 1 0w-40 is very difficult to beat.

You want an oil meeting Porsche A40 spec, regardless of SAE grade.

Yup, or Castrol 0w-40. They're both the same price now at Walmart.

I am torn between Castrol and Mobil 1. Will the Castrol quiet the engine, which is alleged by Royal Purple?

What noise are you referring to?

Cold start?
Idle?
At Operating Temps?
Etc...

The engine makes these slight ping sounds on idle. I am using 93 octane gas and truly baby the car. I allow the car to idle for 5 - 10 minutes before driving it even in the summer.

I am checking with the tech and believe he uses Mobil 1.

How did you come to the conclusion that this noise has any correlation with the oiling system?

Have you hooked up a scanner and checked for any codes?

+2 Mobil one 0W40 all the way. What filter are you going to use?

Regards, JC.

I bought two different brands....Hengst and Mahle filters.

Do you like one of these over the other?

I have not but read that some oils help the car purrrr......

Since Mobil 1 has been in the car, wondering if another will help with this or not. As I have read, Royal Purple apparently helped but I am reluctant to try it.

They're both good filters. Use them both.

Mobil 1 0W40 is suitable for most high performance German engines. German brand cartridge filters (Mann, Mahle, Hengst, Bosch ...) are all good.

What is the sump capacity of Boxster S ? 10 or 12 quarts ? Buying several oil filters online to reduce shipping cost and M1 0W40 5-qt jug at Walmart will the cost of an oil change down to around $50-60.

The car takes 10 quarts and I bought 12 filters online for my 4 cars.

My Lexus LS460 also takes 10 but not nearly as expensive (when you pay to have it done) to change as the Porsche.
