A friend of mine has the car in the title which needs a head gasket. While that's being done, is there anything else that's especially accessible that could be replaced? I think the timing chain needs to be removed anyway so maybe that. Water pump?

If you have the Yankee ingenuity to gasket match the ports, the heads are cast a bit rough. It would flow things better and improve power on a mediocre powered but very durable engine. That 3.0 is a good piece and has been around along time.
Check the heads really close for cracks, we replace the heads a lot on that motor.
Where the exhaust (cat) comes around the back of the engine, the timing covers like to leak coolant. I've replaced a few already. Look on the back side, high on the cover and if you see some gunk built up then it's been leaking.

If it's a high mileage engine, it would be a good time to refreash the head (valve seals, valve seats).

It may be a bit over the top, but mild porting (if you already have the tools) is rather easy to do and makes the engine breathe a bit easier. As-manufactured heads generally have a lot of sharp edges in the ports that can be blended out. As long as it's out and sitting on the bench, and you're a good friend...
Cam Synchronizer is an item that gets worn out a lot, replace it with either a reman or new Motorcraft, and stay away from Dorman on that.
