2000 Taurus transmission issue

3500 rpm on a 20 year old 200,000 mile car IS flogging it. It's like asking a 90 year old to run the 100 yard dash. On cars like that, I drive like I have an egg between the accelerator and my foot. Car went into limp mode. Maybe from tramsmission overheating or too much variation from input and output speeds.
I redline my 244k mile Camry every time I drive it. Runs like a champ.

I used to floor my Duratec every time I took off from a toll booth. Probably why the motor mounts wore out at one point.

Just got back from moving about 1,500lb with my 229kmile ‘99 Camry. I was about wide open at 4K on most every hill, and of course had to hold that for longer than I would to normally get up to speed. Wasn’t worried.

Uh, maybe it is unsafe for a Taurus. I have been doing this every day on my Honda and Toyota with no problem, they were 25 and 27 year old and 270k miles, and actually 3500rpm is just highway crusing.

The problem is Ford building a bad transmission and didn't try to fix the design.

You mentioned in the first post that nobody will loan out scan tools.

Can you go to Advance Auto and have somebody come out to read the codes? I had them do that once and their scanner actually pulled ABS codes. Just make sure to write the codes down so you can verify them for yourself.

but no one in our area let’s you borrow scan tools anymore
Do you mean auto parts stores aren't scanning codes because of COVID currently ? I never considered them loaning out a scan tool but I guess they could. Would certainly be helpful in cases where you can't drive the car to their location.

ive had o reily just hand me one for use in parking lot.

aap az and or will all scan them for you around here.

but forscan is the right advice here.

Ebay sells the bluetooth version for like $4 shipped. Just go buy one and connect to your phone and run Torque Lite.

I think some are not doing it because of the law. Some union protests that scanning code is "repair work" and should be done by certified tech, then our Governator sign it into law so now nobody will do it.

Of course they are happy to sell you a tool to DIY still, but no loaning out scanner or scanning for you. Ebay here we go.

Like you can't return electrical parts, I doubt they would loan out anything electronic.
I suspect this is the case. I looked at O'Reillys and they don't loan out anything ODBII-looking or scan tools. Do others ? Maybe...

Those stores still have the big banners in their windows offering "Free engine code scan" so I presume they're still doing it. I do know they won't clear codes (anymore). Before I bought a scanner, my son and I had removed the air intake on his car to do some work, including unplugging the MAF. I reminded him not to start the car with it unplugged but he forgot so it threw a code. I told him go to O'Reillys (there's one a 1/2 mile away) and have them clear it. They wouldn't (for some bullcrap liability reason, they said) but told him "I have to run back inside for something. Can you hang onto this ? Don't touch that button though (wink, wink)."

It's been like that for a while, they can't clear the code for you but if you borrow it or use it yourself, you can do it. I guess they want to be able to say that they don't clear error codes. Considering how cheap ELM327 code readers are, I keep a spare in the glove compartment.
