a friend has a 2000 ford ranger. Does anyone know if the headlights (I think 9007) have relays or do they run through the headlight switch? Old fords used to run through the headlamp switch and melt everything out. Thoughts?

Runs through the headlight switch.

I wired mine to trigger an aftermarket relay on a 12 gauge headlight harness.

This was true on explorers with autolights but not rangers.

I've heard of headlight switches melting on older F-Series and Broncos, but never on later model Rangers. It may not be the best design, but it works. If it's not broke, don't fix it IMO.

"Need" is a strong word but I will tell you my lights on the '96 are noticeably brighter and whiter after building my relay harness. Too bad the aftermarket cobra housings can't put that light to good use.

just FYI an e-bay supplier have a headlight relay and harness assembly (Octane Lighting?) for in the high $30 range, sets up for 2 sealed beam or H-4 units. Appears to be nearly identical to a $20 and a $12? dollar unit.

On my Jeep Cherokee XJ's, I use the LMC truck headlight harness 36-3580. It's $29.95. I paid about $40 for the brown truck to deliver to my door.
