2000 miles roundtrip to pick up a part instead of having it shipped.

1,000 miles in one day, followed by 1,000 the next? while driving at speeds to maximize mpg? in a car built for mpg and not comfort?

I might prefer to have a tooth pulled. 2 days (let alone more) is worth more than $400 to me. Ridiculous shipping price or not. I get it, might be a fun drive, but I'm not so sure the variables add up here.

What are you losing in the two days' loss of labor adding value to your other cars/repairs needed? Are you really going to make up the difference? you also haven't counted meals in the equation, either.

Also, how much risk in driving the 2k mile trip vs. the car in the driveway while (insert carrier name here) does the driving? I ask because yesterday as I drove 2 miles to pick up dinner someone pulled out from a side street stopping right in front of me as I came along about 35mph. I missed t-boning his truck by about 4 feet.

I've done that several times and it really sucks. By the end of the second day, you hurt and can't wait to get out of the car.
It's been years but I thought it was bad enough doing 800. I think as a teen/20/22 year old it was easier. Now I don't know if I'd want to do it in a cruiser.

if you like driving and your ambitious, nobody on here will be able to talk you out of it. It will not be cheaper for sure.

When I was in my 20's my brother and I drove from Buffalo to Miami to pickup a Lexus with 150k miles from a buy here pay here dealer, and boy did we have a story to tell.

Worth it no, but we had a life experience.

When I was 40 years younger and didn't mind staying in "budget" hotels/motels and behind the wheel for hours and hours and hours, yeah. it was do-able. Nowadays, it would be $400 well spent to have it delivered. Good luck, stay safe.

Bought this battery pack for a lithium conversion on an older Honda Insight,

$650 for the part and they wanted another $400 for packing and freight. Cheapest one outside of Cali. Planning on going out and picking it up myself. Figuring $100 in gas at 65 mpg and $50 for a motel. Yea yea, I know. But what's your time worth I hear you saying. What if you break down half way there. Not worrying about that. Stupid plan?

Yes. More than you can imagine.

1. Your numbers aren't anywhere near realistic. Triple at a minimum.
2. You have no calculations for risk - wreck, weather, breakdown, violent crime, etc.
3. You have zero cost for food. Yeah, I know, you would eat no matter what. But anyone with a brain knows it's 2x the cost to eat out.
4. But you know it all, so go for it.
5. Don't forget about traffic in all those big cities you are probably more comfortable in versus a crossroads in the country.

$140 in fuel at a minimum (2000/55 MPG x $3.80)
$290 in hotels (you forget about bed tax, local fees, taxes and taxes)
$60 in extra costs for food
$50 Misc (like toll bridges, roads, etc)

My extreme conservative figure is $540, I bet you don't spend a dime under $600.

Well then I can check out motels farther out of town. Probably cheaper too.

So you're mileage and time will increase. I'm not sure of too many "$50" motels on interstate exits. Know why? Because that property within 1 mile of an interstate exit that has life (what you city folks crave) is some of the most expensive property known to man. You can't pay for it with a $50/night motel.

Your fuel will increase, your time is increased by 10% or more, "looking" for cheap motels "farther out".

But let us know how it goes, maybe post every 4 hours like a rolling blog? I'm excited to hear about this venture....

For something that is one-off and is irreplaceable, yes absolutely drive. Or if you just enjoy driving. Otherwise I think you will get there and dread the ride back.

Some additional thoughts.

The place in California- what are their operating hours? Weekends? What if you arrive and they can't find the part. What if you have to wait all day for your part to be "picked". Sure, you will get the money back for your battery pack- but not a penny more.

I don't like to think of the part cost and shipping cost being separate this these situations. It's $650 + $400 shipping. That part is now $1050, it's up to you if you are willing to spend that.
But, if you want a road trip, go for it! Sleeping in your car for the night will be cheaper than a hotel/motel!

Cheap motels are full of drug users, prostitutes, crime and most people that stay in them are locals. Look at the housekeeping cart at any motel and good luck if you spot a comforter, blanket or pillows on one. You won't. A slurry of DNA from multiple Johns will be on the comforter or blanket. And when you feel that sharp object in the comforter, it's a piece of chore from a crack stem.

I would sleep in my car and shower at a truck stop before staying at Hooker Inn.

It looks like he's driving to Iowa not Cali. Not that your concerns don't apply in Iowa.

Your F350 rescue gave him inspiration!
