ON, Canada eh?
So my dad and I are doing some preventative maintenance on my Santa Fe to get it ready for Old Man Winter and the neighbour comes over and says his Weed Whacker won't start.

Me and my dad go over and have a look and it turns out that the whipper mechanism at the bottom is seized up and not allowing the engine to turn. We free it up, give it a pull and away she goes.

We come back to the house (were next door), and my dad reminded himself that he needed to fix my aunts Weed Whacker which is the same model. Had been sitting in the back of his van for a while.

We pull it out and there was all sorts of pieces that were taken off by the previous "Small Engine Repair" place that my aunt took it too. They told her she needed a new carb, a new priming ball, a new muffler, coil etc. With labour it was going to be over $300 to fix it.

My aunt told them to leave it, paid them $20 for looking at it and brought it to my dad.

My dad and I played with it this afternoon. Took it all apart and cleaned everything which was full of gunk.

Put it all back together and it wouldn't start. The fuel priming ball was letting air in because it cracked. We replaced it with one that we had from a seized Weed Whacker and it's running great.

So those morons at the repair shop were going to hose her for $300

My dad & I fixed it with an old part he had laying around and with some time. If we had to buy the part it would be $10 from the local store in town.

We put fresh fuel in with 2-stroke oil and some MMO and he Weed Whacked our yard with it.

Makes you go

and wonder how people could be so corrupt.

I mean if they wanted to charge my aunt $60 for fixing it plus the cost of a new priming-ball she would of paid it, but $300 she knew something was wrong...

My dad is going to get her to report them to the B.B.B.

good job steve. i think things like that are all too common mowadays. did i ever tell you about the quote i got from my local chevy dealer for a tune-up on my now long gone Z-28? $800??!!

Reminds me of the bid I got for replacing 150 feet of 6 in X 6 foot boards on my back fence from the lawn service guy.

No kidding, he wanted $8,000 to replace the boards

At that time, cedar fence boards were about $3 each.

Glad we were able to get them up and running... Some crazy quotes HM12460/hate2work

The neighbour we fixed it for is a Comedian and he uses my dad in his routine. One of which is "My Neighbour is such a good mechanic he can make a FORD run right!"

No offense to the FORD group of fans... He changes it up to be GM / Chrysler depending on the audience.

There is a local mower repair shop not far from the house when I lived in NY. The labor rate was so high that most repairs on mowers etc end up costing close to or more than buying a new machine. Every so often a machine was not carted away and left out for trash. My dad and I have taken mowers that literally needed 30 minutes of cleaning and adjusting, and we have used them for years. We have a $600 snow thrower that cost us an hours time and $25 to repair. IIRC this will be the 5th or 6th winter for it. Great when people don't know how to fix things and bring it to these rip off places for repairs!

Near where I live there is a city called Oakville and here people have more money than brains (IMO), and they use a lawnmower or weed whacker until it needs a tune up and throw it out because they think its at the end of its life cycle. My dad and I make it a hobby to drive down to Oakville every now/again in the spring/summer when these units are being thrown out and collect about 5 or so a season. Fix 'em up and give them away to people who can't afford them or need new ones. We have even given some to the Good Will store. This was the summer we collected 12! Most don't need more than new plugs or a carb. cleaning.

I picked one up last Saturday night-put out for trash Craftsman 32 cc weedwacker-gave it a good cleaning with putting it in the gallon of GUNK parts cleaner-which smells mysteriously like SeaFoam-gave it to neighbor who mows lawn with tractor but never trims with a weedwacker or push mower-let's see if he uses it

Steve

Congrats so far I've saved a trimmer based tiller, leaf blower and one trimer (have two more to look at). All they took was fuel line and little cleaning. Now I just need find a chainsaw and snow blower.. running out of room though.

What is that going to do? Unless Canada's BBB is different, the BBB is a joke. They have no regulatory or statutory enforcement powers. Unless said business is a member, the worse that can happen is that said business is kicked out of the BBB.

99.99% of consumers only consult with the BBB "after the fact".

BBB, that is funny!

I'm thinking corrupts because they told her she needed a whole bunch of things she didn't need. Like the Carb. which supposedly had a big crack in it.
