There are really 2 styles of sandwich adapter, and I started this to let folks looking at getting a sandwich adapter know that there are 2 different styles for different reasons.
First this is one that is commonly found on ebay site and it is a machined aluminum (I believe) sandwich adapter, with 4 structural posts in a cross hair pattern, that allow oil to flow to the filter underneath with no obstruction whatever:
I have seen this also at the Amsoil site as a listing for an alternative to getting oil pressure for their bypass filter on a certain application. FWIW, all the bypass sites that I have seen that look for only oil pressure and restriction for their bypass filters recommend the return to a zero pressure point on the engine ie.. oil fill cap or oil pan. What you are looking at here is the underneat side of the adapter, the side that your spin on filter will go. That piece in the center is hollow and on the other side it has a grove/gasket that fits against the engine full flow mount and that center bolt with the hex-head literally screws onto the protruding center thread (filter) and tightens the sandwich to the engine.
Second sandwich design is popularly made by Perma-Cool Manufacturing. I have included a picture of my GM made sandwich with the poppet that closely resembles the sandwich:
This design was off a Buick Regal or LeSabre that used an oil cooler in the radiator.
NOTE: This unit ALSO has the center hollow bolt with hex-head that snugs the sandwich up against the oil mount on the engine. This picutre is without that center bolt, and you are also looking at the "TOP" of the sandwich adapter, the side that goes next to the engine oil filter mount.
Perma-Cool sells a similar sandwich for oil cooling at their site.. easy to just go there and look around at a few. Difference is the poppet. This causes oil to move through the line to a oil cooler and then return back to just above the filter outside before going though the full flow filter and then on into the engine. This was designed for pressure differential to function properly. The blue sandwich above, although similar is not. It is designed for just one thing, and that is a source of oil pressure for either oil sending unit, oil temperature unit or a source of oil for bypass filter unit.
Just wanted to share current observations with you all and so you would know the 2 sandwich adapters work similar, but are different.
