Will adding mineral oil to the oil tank in my snowmobile that is half full of semi-synthetic oil do anything hurtfull, other than change the mineral to synthetic ratio? After all, semi-synthetics contain mineral oil. I've read a lot about people saying to never mix different brands of 2 stroke oils or you are in for a world of hurt. I have done it my snowmobiles for a long time with different sleds with no ill effects. I understand that adding more mineral oil will diminish any possible positive effects that the semi-synthetic promises. But it won't start on fire or turn to concrete in the tank, will it? Like I have said...I have mixed the 2 with zero problems in my own experience.

Seems a TC oil might use differing DP depending on if its syn or convetional. The safe thing is to stay with a good performing brand and dont mix if you can help it. Maybe less a problem with 2 strokers than with sump oil.
I recall reading that one of the requirements for TCW3 certification for two-stroke oil is that an oil mix safely with other TCW3 oils. As most (all?) decent snowmobile oils are so certified you shouldn't have any problems....
I think where the trouble starts is when Caster oil gets mixed with mineral/semi/synthetic oil. I have heard you shouldnt mix a tcw3 oil with a tc oil and with all this biodegradable stuff out there for boat use, it may be good advice. I think you would have to look at what you are mixing and make a educated decision. Since any oil you buy is going to be for use in the snowmobile, I think you would have to really go off track and get a odd ball oil, to actually cause a problem.
Thanks Panzer. That is about the best answer I have heard about the whole mixing 2 stroke oil subject. My sled (ski-doo)manual states to only use an API-TC Low Ash oil...Never use an outboard or ashless 2 stroke oil. The oils I was mixing are BRP mineral injection oil and Mystik Sea and Snow. Runs great and hardly smokes. That whole ashless vs low ash thing screws with my head because Ski-doo demands low ash yet oil brands like Legend and Blue Marble that are both ashless (according to their websites),say that they are JASO FC,FD, API-TC, etc.. Both BRP and Mystik oils claim low ash on the bottle and website. I know the ash works as a detergent so how can anshless oil be certified in the same class a low ash oil?

The detergents used are usually esters that are substituted for the calcium sulfonates or silicylates.
