2 Redline samples, 2 different Labs

I sent off two samples of the same oil to two different labs. One went to Blackstone, the other Analysts Inc. Should be interesting to see the differences, if any between the two. I'm sending them off tomorrow. Hopefully they won't get lost in the mail and they can get the results back asap. I'd expect the TBN numbers to differ. Oil had 7,800 miles. High speed driving with lots of high rpm shifts.
 
I'm curious to see the results. RL uses Analysts Inc. in S. California. The one I'm using is in IL but I don't expect any differences. The main difference will be whether two labs show similar results testing the same batch of oil.
 
TBN will be different unless you specify which one the industry uses D-2896 that is what all additive data sheets and PCMO/HDEO data sheets use
Analysts uses D-664 I think which is way low so phone in a change and ask for same TBN from both labs.

I've sent identical samples to different labs. It's one of the reasons I have a good laugh when I see people debate a few ppm of wear metals between used oil analysis. Additive levels reported varied by hundreds of ppm. Viscosity by 0.5 cSt.
 
I'll bet you ahead of time that Blackstone will be lower on both additive levels and TBN.

Almost all labs now use ASTM D-4739 protocol to test the TBN's of oils that have been in service. The result from this test is about 2.0 points lower than the ASTM D-2896 test cited by Bruce.

Why test Redline after only 7800 miles in a non-turbocharged, four cylinder engine?

Ted, the oil is still in the engine. I used the Amsoil pump to take a sample. I just want to get an idea to how the oil is holding up at this mileage considering how I've driven the car over the last 4 months. I also know VTEC engines tend to thin the oil out a bit. I have a Amsoil Ea oil filter for the next run of the SM rated Redline, which isn't reall SM btw, but does have improved frictional properties according to RL.

So, by how much did wear metals vary? Only a few ppm, I suppose(?)

I like to use D-2896 since a lot of my work is R+D or QA and having a "standard" that my additive suppliers use is easier and more accurate for my work. And yes there are what? at least 4 TBN routines and they are all different in answers so always talk apples and apples when any lab work is done.

Well, my Grecian friend ..there's differences in calibration and procedures and just plain normal variations. When you're shaving crumbs ..it gets harder to make sure all the pieces are the same size.

The main thing that UOA tells you is the condition of the oil. Beyond that you kinda need to read trends. Surely less is better in terms of elemental wear ..but it's more of a reading of the static background noise. You're really looking for the unusual spikes.
