Today I bought 2 jugs of 5w20 pennzoil platinum, and a wix xp filter, going to do the first change this weekend at 7800 miles. Havin 2nd thoughts about the filter, but I know it'll be fine.

Why second thoughts about the filter? Change it out and replace it with a quality filter, done deal.
You'll be fine with the wix. I switched to a wix from a Mopar filter on my Caravan. No issues.
I have a 2013 Ram Laramie with the same drivetrain you have. I also use the Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 oil and the Wix filter and have had ZERO problems. In my opinion the Wix is a quality filter!

I wish there were more information available on filter performance. There is a good article on the Noria web site from Machinery Lubrication Magazine in 2003 titled "How Flow and Vibration Affect Filter Performance -Inside and Outside the Lab" This article and various SAE papers and work done by Oklahoma State University have shown that standard filter test procedures do NOT always reflect real world filter performance. Such factors as variable flow rates, viscosity changes and vibration all affect filter performance and are not reflected in standardized tests. About all that a consumer can do is to purchase well made filters and rely on the integrity of the manufacturer to provide the best combination of performance. I personally use Wix manufactured filters, including the XP for extended drain intervals. Does anyone on this site have access to a better source of information?

Return it and get a regular Wix
Im goin to use it, and have the same piece of mind as I would had I never stumbled upon this website. Im sure if engines were failing due to filterin efficiency we'd have heard much more about it. Theres probably thousands of these engines doing fine on supertech's or fram orange cans of death, and supertech oil from walmart.
If possible, I always try to use OEM filters until out of warranty. OEM Mopar is probably a Wix though. Even though I make sure I use a quality oil filter on my Hemi, I've always given more attention to my air filter of choice. I have seen it make a great deal of difference on the appearance of the oil as it wears. Probably should pay for an analysis someday just to see scientifically I guess.
I changed it today, and dissected the factory filter, I have several pictures of it, but no i mage hosting (long ago forgot/lost my password.
