My neighbor wants me to take a look at this car, says the oil light is on and doesn't know why. I'm assuming it's the pressure warning light. My first guess is potential sludge and blocked oil pump pickup screen, maybe PCV issues, since I assume he's been using cheap bulk oil and doing 10k oil changes following the maintenance monitor (probably even going past it, this family doesn't seem too interested in maintaining their vehicles).

Does anyone that knows these cars have other suggestions on what to look for?

1. check oil level. if it's low add some. if it looks /nasty/ consider a change.

2. briefly start car. if stays lit, engine off.

3. test oil pressure with manual pressure gauge. if pressure good, replace sender. if pressure bad, you'll need to be really close neighbors to go much farther into it...

If that's the case, then I would not even come near that car. Anything you say or do to this car may be held against you.

I'm not sure I'd touch it.

In their minds the last person to touch it is probably the first person to blame. They can't reason much further than that.

Please remember that the Hatfield McCoy feud started over a pig.

As such I will only give advice to neighbors about their cars. Never touch them.

Exactly,^^^^ no one seem`s to take the blame for their own doing`s anymore. It`s always somebody else`s fault.

I agree with everyone saying don't put yourself in a position of responsibility if something goes wrong... but I'd still help the guy if he's a neighbor and friend. Start out by telling him right off the bat how deadly serious a low oil pressure condition is- that the engine may ALREADY be destroyed. Then help him figure out if its a false warning or a real problem. Put a real gauge on it, replace the sending unit if necessary, etc. but don't get into the guts of the engine and make sure he KNOWS you're just looking at the indicators, not the actual engine.

If its a real problem, tell him that he needs to get it to a professional. Don't offer to help him try home remedies or anything like that.

I miss the days when if a neighbor had a car problem, you could go over and help out, including helping him winch the destroyed engine out and put a new one in if it came to that, all without ever considering "liability." :-/ A cousin of mine was helping a neighbor once, and the battery popped spraying acid all around. No one was seriously hurt, though my cousin did make a trip to the minor emergency center to get his eyes checked and thoroughly flushed. The neighbor apologized profusely, but my cousin just said, "aw, stuff like that happens." And everybody KNEW that you take a certain risk whenever you opened the hood, but it was just part of life. Now its like opening the hood is breaking some "do not tamper" seal. I hate that attitude.

Thanks for the tips everyone, good advice. Haven't seen the car yet. Owner says synthetic oil chages every 10k miles. Pressure light has only been seen once or twice, and goes on when he hits the gas pretty hard.

That would seem to indicate some blockage in the pickup screen perhaps? I was going to suggest a couple short interval oil changes with Rotella or maybe cheap oil and some MMO or Seafoam?

Warn him about what can happen.Recommend Check everything mentioned above, also check for a collapsed oil filter.
If everything seems ok-- Kreen it. Kreen will do job twice better and fasster than MMO, Seafoam or anything else.

Sounds more like an indicator issue to me. "On the gas hard" can cause wires to move due to torque-induced engine motion. High-RPM oil pressure can cause a bad sending unit to erroneously indiciate low.

Or it could be a mechanical issue too, but don't rule out the simple stuff.

Is it the low oil level light?

Those little C class's are pretty good if taken care of, if not its anyone's guess.

Follow up: did a bunch of stuff including oil change, plugs, air filter, fuel filter, transmission fluid and filter (and replaced a spring in the valve assembly), plus brake light switch. They had been pushing the OCIs well past 10k I think and the oil was pretty beat up but probably ok and the filter was ok. The oil light hasn't bee coming back on lately so I think a couple short OCIs will clean it up.

Bigtime transmission shifting issues: won't go out of first gear on its own until it's warmed up, TC won't lock up smoothly. Mostly happens when cold and ok when warm. I'm hoping the brake light switch replacement will fix some of this.
