I have a 1998 Nissan Sentra with 190,000 miles. The yellow check engine light came on, and I took it to Auto Zone to have it scanned. The code was for a small EVAP leak. A small leak could be any where in the system. Does anyone have any experience with this, or ideas where to start?

negative on the gas cap...

More than likely you need a vent control valve and a new evap canister.

Those Sentras as notorious just like all the other Nissans for those valve to fail. And I have more Sentra's come in with saturated canisters which keep stopping the gas pump making it very hard to put gas in the vehicle.

is this a repair the average guy can do at home? this isn't my primary car, will it hurt it to drive the car like it is for a while?

I dont understand why "negative on the gas cap".
Sure there can be issues elsewhere in the system but the cap is an integral part of the leak check process.

The evap system is placed under vacuum when the evap test is run ANY leak will trip a code.
Trying a new cap is the cheapest thing and definitely the first thing to try.
Rotten pipes from the filler neck are also common.
Unless you have a smoke pot at home anything other than changing the cap is best left to a shop.

They do make canned smoke, not knowing your abilities i cant say if you can fix it at home.
