Good afternoon,
We've just purchased a new to us 1997 Rav4 5 speed and I've been looking at the manual to decide what to replace the driveline oil with. I've been using Red Line products for a number of years now, but I have a few questions on this application.

The transmission specifies 75w-90 GL-5. Now, normally I would put in RedLine MT-90, but I see that it is only GL-4 rated...would the correct oil then be the 75w90 gear oil as is mentioned on RedLine's site:
If the transmission or transaxle requires an SAE 90 GL-5 gear oil, then Red Line 75W90NS or 75W140NS Gear Oil may be used.

The rear diff calls for Hypoid GL-5 80w90. I'd think that I'd use 75w90 here, as I do need the LS additive, but I'm unsure about the hypoid thing. Is is assumed that all GL-5 oils can be used in a hypoid environment?

Thanks,
Bogatyr

Boga,

If the manf. specifies a true GL5, that means the transmission needs more EP protection than the Redline MT90 can give you.

Our Mate Sprintman is right on.
