1996 Regal PS pump whine?

The Power Steering Pump on my 96 Regal has been whining since I purchased the car at 30,000 miles.

My question is can I rebuild the PS pump and cure the whine or will I have to purchase a new or rebuilt replacement?
The whine increases with rpm and is not one of those whines that only grows louder when the steering wheel is turned.
I have heard many other mid 90’s GM cars with the same PS pump whine.
I have the factory service manual but it only shows an exploded view and never mentions the shaft (bearing) bushing.

So far I have only found one link talking about later model GM PS pumps.

Don't know what maijority opinion is on BITOG, but I've seen Lucas Power steering Conditioner and Stop Leak stop similar noise in GM.

Valvoline Synpower stopped my old Ford's pump from whining.
For a while. A new pump cured the problem completely.

I've used Honda PS fluid(Bardal brand-$1.98) in several GM pumps and it has cured the noise quite successfully. You can purchace it at WalMart.

I remember reading some where that GM (Delphi) had a design problem with their PS pumps that was corrected around 2000.
Wish I could find more information on this?
I have tried additives with no change in the loud whine.
Guess the next step is to remove and clean the pressure control valve.

My Monte Carlo was doing that and it turned out to be just a low fluid level. If you haven't alrady done so, check that before going any further.

GM used to call this morning sickness. There are some addatives thet help but, my best succuss was with the Honda Power Steering fluid. Any brand.

Does the pump leak fluid? If so, just change out the pump.

What are the condition of the pump hoses? Are they leaking?

Power stearing pump whine is caused by air in the system - which is usually caused by a leak somewhere.

PS. Make sure you get a life time warranty on any parts you buy.
