My f-250 had that famous noisy power steering whine and finally, the high pressure hose blew. So a new pump and hoses and a filter were in order.
I did some reading here about PS Fluid versus using ATF. It was like reading here about what oil brand or filter to buy. Many opinions.
I settled on Valvoline synthetic ATF. I decided to pay someone else to have fun doing this. The mechanic is a Ford guy and commented on how my pump now makes no noise and he is thinking about a fluid change to this fluid on his truck. Now I have no power steering whine at all! I'll post any issues if they come up.

ATF has better wear packages than power steering fluid, less wear, and stable flow for a hydraulic system.
