A buddy of mine who already has two "classic" Saabs is considering buying a newer 95 900SE. It is dark blue with leather interior and a 2.5 V6. The car is immaculate for the mileage which is about 150000 if I remember correctly. I'm kinda wondering if anyone here has any experience with this model which was built from 94 to 98. I'm hoping the reliabitly record of this engine is as decent as the 900 classic that preceded it. He hasn't bought the car yet and asked me what I thought or I gave my opinion unheeded I cain't remember. I told him to buy it for as cherry as car appears. He won't tell me the price(he's secretive and that's fine with me) so I don't know if he is getting a good deal or not. I just know the car appears immaculate and sounds good with no smokage or apparent leaks.

How reliable were Saab V6's from this era. It appears to be the GM Opel V6. The 54 degree one. I think this is the daddy of the one put in to the Catera. I know that one had alot of issues but I'm hoping this one didn't.

KBB blue books this car at $3400 dealer price and since he is buying form a dealer that should be close to what he is paying.

I just wonder if any of you have any knowledge of this model. Thanks in advance!

Tell him to run!!!! Avoid the Saab GM V-6 like the Plague!!!!!

The saab 2.0 and 2.3 4 cylinder is great engine that has been around in form or another for about 30 years. I have had over 100 saabs with these engines. They are will built except for the well known sludge issue on later years/models which you can research by looking at BrianWC's posts. I've had several of the classic 900's and 9000's with over 200 and 300k on them.

Those GM Europe V6s are nothing but problems. It is to be avoided!!!!

Wow, I'm famous! Yeah, the general feeling on the v-6 is that they are not that great. But I've known people who've run them for hundreds of thousands of miles and stated that as long as you were proactive on the maintenance front, they were fine cars. At the very least, for a v-6 900 of that vintage, I wouldn't pay more than a couple of thousand bucks. Really, any of the early newer generation 900's were kinda below par. A nice 1996-1998 900 or a 1999 9-3 would be the car to look for. Little to worry with on the sludge front. Matter of fact, some folks have run nothing but dino in cars of that vintage.

I'd also point out, that despite my sludging issues, I got 155k relatively worry-free miles out of my 9-5. It was actually a transmission leak that had me looking to trade it in.
