The problem with automatics and the ATF for them is that different fluids have different friction modifiers, among other properties. I too, would be adamant about putting a synthetic in my transmission, but if it lubricates too much, and the required fluid is one that is not too slippery, it can cause clutch slippage, and all sorts of problems......

You ARE referring to an automatic transmission, right?

Did anyone not see my previous post? Alldiscountparts (dot) com has ATF Z-1 for $4.34/qt. It's hard to find in their catalog system, though. You have to go to the "Accessory" catalog for Honda (they also have a GM catalog)

The ATF Z-1 is part number 08200-9001 $4.34/qt.
MTF is part number 08798-9016 $4.24/qt
Also have CR-V Dual Pump Fluid, and Pilot VTM-4 Differential Fluid

The "catch" is the 10.95 handling charge, but no different than Summit or JEG'S. Order more, and the charge per item goes down.

I have a 92 dx 118k miles, that also downshifts harsh from 3-2. I did the drain and fill with ATF Z-1 and it did not help.

I don't know if the transmissions are comparable, but last September I picked up a '91 Accord LX, auto with 140K miles on it. Super hard 3-2 downshift, and the upshift wasn't much better. I flushed and replaced the existing fluid with Amsoil Multi-Vehicle fluid. Completely smoothed out the harsh shifting. Now the car has 162K miles on it, and its still shifting smoothly.

I only paid $200 for this car, but it runs like a top, and has been my wife's daily driver since I purchased it. I spent the money for the amsoil precisely because I can't afford to replace a trans, let alone purchase a newer vehicle at this time. It would seem to me that the additional amount of dollars more whatever happens to actually be the best fluid to use costs would be cheap insurance. I'll take spending $100 or $150 every 30K miles over a couple grand for trans work or a new car every 100K any day.

I have an 89 Accord. It is very touchy about having the shifter cable adjusted exactly right to get good up and down shifts. I think that the 90 and newer models were different because they used electronics to control shifting.

I meant to say the throttle position cable (the one that runs from the gas pedal linkage to the transmission so that the transmission can sense how far the pedal is being depressed) not the shifter cable.
