1976 f100

I've got a 1976 f100 with a modern 289 motor at 28,000 miles. What weight of oil would you use in it? It's at 28,000 miles and I get it out on the interstate about once a month for a good long drive.

As the 289 is a flat tappet engine. Often a diesel rated 15w40, such as Rotella would be an easy to find, reasonably prices, robust choice, and these types of oils contain enough ZDDP to keep the cam and lifters safe.

There are plenty of robust oils available that have sufficient viscosity and good additive packages. A personal favorite is Mobil 1, 15W-50.

Well, this engine would have called for a 10w30 when new.
If you want a little extra, any syn blend 10w30 HDEO should be a good pick.
I doubt that this engine needs a 15w40 or 15W-50 although either would do no harm.

A 10w30 VR1, if it can be found, should be a fine choice. If one is looking for synthetic, I can't see a problem with an A3/B4 option, or something like Royal Purple HPS.

I had a 1976 E-100. The rear embleming read "Econoline 150".

300 cid 6, C4 transmission, no cigarette lighter (though it did have the ashtray's removable liner), smallest gas tank Ford ever supplied, paper coated beaverboard headliner

10W-30 SuperTech conventional is all you need in that old girl. If you're driving it in the winter a lot, use 5w30. If it's using oil, switch to MaxLife blend or even SuperTech High Mileage.

+1 on the SuperTech. Any decent 10w30 will be fine. Throw in some STP or Rislone for ZDDP if not using HDEO.

I would just use a good 10w30, preferably a high mileage one. You don't need to worry about "ZDDP" and skip the STP-snake oil...

Don't use any STP or any other additive.
You can use any namebrand 5-30,10-30,10-40.
Easy.

I would have recomended Shell Rotella 10w30 a month ago, but the new CK-4 spec has reduced zddp to 800 ish ppm on most HDEOs i think.
A Stock 289 doesn't need mega high levels of zddp but it's never bad to play it safe.
