1972 ford ranger xlt...oil recommendations

My son just bought a 72 Ford Ranger xlt, nice old truck with the 360ci engine and a c6 automatic. It has 126,ooo miles but hasn't been driven much since 2000 when the owner passed away. His son decided to sell it and my son bought it. What type of oil do you guys think should be ran in it? He's thinking of one of the high mileage 10w30 oils. Thoughts and opinions are appreciated. The transmission and diff will also be serviced. Thanks

and/or 10w30 conventional Rotella. You might even find the T5 semi-syn version cheaper.

And it is still possible to find true Ford Type F ATF. Pep Boys carries Castrol's brand and NAPAs sell Valvoline. Congrats on the purchase and enjoy.

I would probably lean toward Rotella T5, should be a good match for that old truck. Maybe a 10-40 if the motor is tired. What kind of shape is the truck in?

Since the truck didn't driven much for 12 years, all fluids should be changed.

I would put in your favorite 15w40 and a Fl1A oil filter. Those Fe's were pretty good. Plan on a valve job and hard seats if it has not already been done.

If the truck is in NC and the mountains where the weather gets cold, I would put in a brand name 5w30 like Pennzoil conventional or Valvoline conventional and change it in about 2500 miles. Then I would do the same thing in another 2500 miles. That should help clean the motor. Also use a good oil filter at each oil change. After 12 years, the engine may need some good cleaning out with frequent oil changes and filter changes. Change trans and differential fluids too. Hope he got it for a good price.

Thanks for all the replies. It looks like he will be going with the Rotella 15w40. We live near Greensboro NC so the weather isn't too extreme.The truck was painted about 12 years ago so it still looks pretty good. We will also change the transmission fluid and diff oil as well. Type F for the transmission and 80w90 for the diff. He's considering synthetic for the diff but I don't see the need. Will try to post some pics soon. Thanks again
