19.5 Briggs and Stratton

I have a Craftsman rider with a two cylinder, 19.5 HP (Turbo Cool I/C Platinum) Briggs engine on it. After cleaning out the carb and fixing the ignition, I can't get it to draw gas into the carb from the tank. The tank is in the rear and when I blow compressed air into it, gas comes out at the end of the line where it attaches to the carb. Is there a pump on it? Am I just missing the obvious? The cap isn't the problem. HELP!

If the tank is in the back or lower than the engine, it's got a fuel pump. The only ones I've seen without fuel pumps are the under hood mount fuel tanks, where the tank sets higher than the carb. Trace around the fuel line to the carb bowl. These little vacuum-pulse fuel pumps are sensitive to even minor plugging of the fuel filter. Sometimes even the fuel filter itself can be too restrictive and prevent adequate fuel flow (cheap non-OEM filters). Other than that, the vac-pulse line from the crankcase to the pump could be off , plugged, etc or the fuel pump itself is toast.

The vacuum-powered pump on the front of the carb was working just fine. The old, cracked, leaky line going from the filter to the carb (the last foot and a half) was the problem. I wouldn't have known if I hadn't pressurized the tank again and seen the gas squirting out of it. The pump was just sucking air. Learn something new everyday.
