I have been doing some research on this oil, Chevron Delo 400 in particular and you 15w40 guys are right as far as the Delo having good base numbers, flash, ect..

My questions is: Will the 15w40 hdeos with its high ash and zinc cause the plugs in a gas engine more likely to foul. I used to run Valvoline VR1 20w50(high zinc content)in my Firebird and the plugs did foul out more than usual. I stopped using the VR1 and I have not had this problem. I am seriously considering the Delo 15w40 for my 69 Firebird and do not want to run into this same problem.

I must assume a fair amount of oil is entering your combustion chambers. If this is the case then it does make sense that any of the higher ash oils will cause plug issues.

What oil are you using now?

Is it a mechanical issue or have you considered AutoRx?

Don't let the oil stop you on an issue like that IMHO. You need the higher zinc for that motor.

I don't have any problems like this though to be honest. I run teflon PC seals on my intakes, oil seperator on the PCV line, and a powerful ignition. Got about 10K on the plugs in my 440 now and they still look good.

I run Delo400 in everything at the moment, including a Ford 4.6 that burns a little bit of oil as well, no problems there either.

Pablo, actually I have not used the Valvoline VR1 for a little over a year. I changed to the Valvoline All Climate 20w50 in December of 03 because Valvoline stated that the All Climate would start easier than the VR1 winter. I did not have any problems with the All Climate. In March of 2005, I wanted to try a lighter, synthetic oil so I am currently using Royal Purple 15w40. I have not had any plug fouling issues since I changed the VR1 in 2003. I would like to try the Delo 400 due to its price $1.76 compared to the Royal Purple $6.18 in my area. Because this car sees some abuse and occasional drag racing, I cannot afford to change the Royal Purple as often as I would like to(every 3-4 months). My Firebird is driven maybe 1500 miles a year if that.
