15w40 in gas engine ?

I've got it!! I've come up w/ an intriguing plan that helped make up my mind (I think for real).

Something I'd really like to do is drop some Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40 in my Mazda and see how far into the sunset I can drive. The last time this engine saw M1 was around '99 and it all ended with a leak and start-up smoke (the tri-syn days I believe). I will really get into this test. Assuming reasonable consumption, drive it a year, do a dipstick UOA and see where to go from there. If Amsoil had a long drain HM (perhaps that's an oxymoron) that would be the best choice for this drive to the Netherworld. This is too cool. Brilliant! May have to head to the bright lites of Walmart tonite. Pablo, if Amsoil has an answer to long drain w/ serious seal conditioning (start-up smoke control) let me know (soon).

If you are having oil use or smoking problems I would recommend avoiding the synthetics (especially M1) and blends altogether. My number one choice for reducing oil consumption due to any reason is the Delo 400 15w40 CJ-4 and the previous version. My 351W just loves it in the warmer months. Water it down with Havoline 5W-20 in the cooler months.

But how can H1 call that line of oil an HM if doesn't perform essentially like the other HMs? Are the synthetic HMs in a different category? That is, do the dino HMs help slow or stop leaks, and help reduce oil consumption and start-up smoke, but the Synthetic HMs are just good for HM vehicles but don't give any of these key benefits? I will be bummed if this is the case. Messing with my simple plan. So Mobil 1 High Mileage is going to cause leaks in HM vehicles - I'm not saying that's not the case, I'm asking. (??)

A historical gripe about Synthetics is "they cause or expose seal issues". As was the case with M1 for me years ago (leaking by a seal). So when they come out with an Synthetic HM, you're saying this one key gripe has not been resolved??

I have switched many higher mileage engines to various M1's, and in each case the oil has made an attempt to clean off and revitalize or recharge the gasket set and seals. I get weeping from here, then there. In all cases I have ended up with a leaking engine because of the shrink issue with M1. I can switch to Syntec and the leaking will stop, but the weeping will continue for a while. Use M1 from the start or not all IMO.

I feel your chances for success are best with the Delo 400 15w40. It is relatively cheap, so you can dump it without remorse if things don't work out.

Rodbuckler,

I realize Mobil 1 High Mileage is new on the market - but have you switched anyone to it and had this experience. I would just really think M1 would trick out their HM line to correct this issue.

No, but I came very close to buying the Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30 last night on sale at sterlize-the-sea-mart for my winter oil. But I chickened out and bought some RTS and more Delo. If you find that the Mobil 1 High Mileage actually stays in the engine, let us know.

Vilan, I had a 1995 Geo Metro witht he three cylinder. I bought it off my wifes boss for her to drive two miles two and from work. To make a long story short three months latter she was pregnant and no kid of mine was rideing in that little rolling coffin born or unborn. So it became mine and she got my 4Runner. Now you have to picture the guy from the Bounty paper towel labels driveing in a little Geo Metro.LOL

Towards the end of ownership with that car I was driveing foot to the floor board with about 150lbs of tools 3 1/2 hours each way to and from work. The only way I could control the oil consumption in that thing was with 20W50 or 15W40. Now if I did not do long high speed drives it diod not use any oil even with 10W30.My uncle bought that car off me and he continued to make long highway comutes. For three more years. When he totaled it he bought another used GEO but got the 4 cylinder model.

I drove that Geo through a blizard twice and freq. through 3 feet of snow to get from country road to main road. I had little tiny LT/Truck tires on it with mud terrain for winter and yokaham radial for the warm months. To add to this little cars already heavy burden I had a 100watt two way radio in it!

I bought that Metro used about 6 years ago. At first the consumption was not too bad, maybe a quart or two per OCI. Now I wish I could go back to those days.

I mostly do long highway commutes. Even with my pseudo-10W40 in there, it seems a bit unhappy. At idle, it occasionally bogs down like it's going to stall. I don't have the guts to try 20W50... I'll just go back to 5W30 and live with it. But other than that it runs great. I tell folks I get the mileage of a hybrid for the cost of one month's payment on a hybrid.
