Ahh, a 50 weight in winter; that's got to hurt the fuel economy...

People with diesels do it all the time but they have block heaters. I would definitely in the least use an oil pan heater. Better to use Rotella 5w-40 or Mobil 1 5w-40 TDT.

Testament to running synthetic in northern climate.

don't know your app but we have used 15w40 down to -20f with a block heater. my 15w40 has a cold pour point of 4f, there are alot of options depending on engine specs, generally lighter is better in cold temps, just go by owners manual specs

Many years ago, I used to use 20-50 and even straight 40 through Chicago winters.
Somehow I always got started [but I keep my vehicles in very good shape].
I could also say there were no problems, but that is simply not true.
A thinner and more appropriate oil would have given me faster starts, better flow for cold lubrication, better power, and gas economy.

15w50 is a SYN and has a lower pour point than 15w40 which is usually a group II or II+

I wouldnt feel bad running it at 15-20F but If it was a daily driver I would go for a 10wXX or lower.

if it is ok down to 15-20F -9.44c' to -6.67c'i don't see that cold at all in my area.

Yep. 2000 Dodge Caravan. This on advice of a mechanic friend. But I now know from lurking here that there are better choices.
