I am looking at a Ruger 10/22 with the 25 round clip for around $300 new. I also saw
a Marlin Model 60 used autoloader for $125. Money is kind of an issue, but so is
capacity. Opinions?

If you can't hit whatever you're shooting at with 15 rounds, then 10 more won't help.

If money's an issue maybe a gun purchase isn't the best choice right now.

That said, either gun will serve you well, I'm not aware of any issues with either.

None of these rifles take clips, they take magazines. There is a difference.
The Ruger is the better firearm and it is very reliable. The BX25 mags are awesome! Guns are never a bad thing to spend money on so go for it especially with the assault on gun rights these days....get em' while you can.

+1 Ruger 10/22.

I have a stainless synthetic and a stainless walnut version.

The syn stock is a bit cheap feeling.

I ended up getting a butler creek folding stock a long time a go and it is beautiful.

Ruger 10-22 is an excellent 22cal rifle with lots and lots of secondary market parts and additions you can make to it.

Ruger gets my vote on this one.

+1. The 10/22 was my first rifle. The good ol days of buying bricks of 22lr and loading those dark plastic banana mags.

The Marlin is a nice rifle, and you would be fine with either firearm, but I vote for the 10/22. My father has an older tubular magazine fed Marlin 60, I have a 10/22, both of which I have shot more rodents with than I can shake a stick at, and my preference is for the 10/22. I may catch some flack for this, but I would give a slight edge in accuracy to the Marlin out of the box, but the 10/22 has limitless aftermarket mods you can make once you get bitten by the bug. That being said, a nice bull barrel, some good glass, and a trigger job on the 10/22 will shoot better than most people are capable of shooting.

10/22 all day long and twice on Sunday. It is well worth the extra $$$.

Nothing wrong with the Marlin, but comparing a Marlin 60 with a 10/22 is like comparing a hamburger with a ribeye steak.

I vote for the 10/22. Lots of aftermarket support, and it is apt to retain that value upon resale (if that is a consideration). I have a carbine (short stock), and a couple of the 25rnd mags. Fun gun. I think I might still prefer my long barrel bolt more, but, the 10/22 is still a fun gun. [Thought about a Takedown for a trunk gun, haven't gotten that far just yet.]

Not sure why capacity in a 22 is of a large consideration. Sure, I'd prefer 100+ round mags, but I sure don't like pressing each of those little buggers home into the magazine...

If you're going to be spending $300 you can put a little more with it and find a good used Marlin 39a. That rifle is going to be of much much higher quality than the 10/22 or 60. I don't think there's much difference in the quality between a 60 and 10/22.

OP should look at the Marlin 795. I've got one and love it. I think it'd combine the capacity (can get 25 round mags) and price. I bought mine for $150 and $25 for the higher capacity magazine. It's a very light rifle, it's so much easier to carry than the 10/22 or the 60. I've shot both the 10/22 and my 795 and couldn't tell the difference in accuracy at 100 yds.

A few dollars? First *IF* you can find one prepare to pay almost twice! (around here clean 39A's are a easy $500+)

Even the Henry's are close to $300.

The Marlin 60 is a little more accurate out of the box than a 10/22 I've found. Had/have a few of each so I'm familiar.

EITHER is an excellent weapon. So is the 39A and the henry's.

IMO you can go wrong with any of them!

Bill

I looked before I posted. Good looking 39 for $400. Sure they aren't everyday but they come up pretty often. It's easily worth 100 more than a run of the mill 10/22.
