The truck was delivered about 3 weeks ago, and is equipped with the 5.0L Coyote. Dealer said to run the factory fill to 8,000 km (5,000 miles) before the first oil change. Service on the truck is free of charge up to the 64,000 km (40,000 mile) mark, which basically consists of nothing but 8 oil changes with Middle Eastern sourced Castrol GTX 10w30 that "meets the performance requirements of API SL".

Say what you will, but draining the factory fill early makes me feel warm and fuzzy - to each their own, right? As I was checking the oil, something didn't seem right - it was too dark, had a very strong sulfuric smell to it and what was on the dipstick had a rather rough texture to it. At 1,758 km (1,098 miles), I decided to get that stuff out of there.

Picked up 8 liters of M1 0W-40 (slump takes 7.7L), a Motorcraft FL-500S filter and got to work. Before anyone gives me the obligatory "that thing takes 5W-20", 10w30 is what's recommended (not required) and they could care less what you run here, so long as it gets changed regularly. M1, I beleive, is an excellent choice for the 5,000 mile drain intervals required.

I couldn't bare the smell of the used oil in the drain pan.

Here's the factory oil filter, slightly taller than the FL-500S:

Engine runs smoother than it did on factory fill, you can barely hear/feel it idle!

Differential fluid (2WD) will be drained and refilled with Motorcraft 75W-140 next.

From his owner's manual most likely. He took delivery of the truck in Kuwait.

My Track Pack Mustang takes 5W50 and there are no internal differences between it and the 5.0s that take 5W20. I would have no problems running a 0W40 in the environment that Falcon is in. I would be interested in seeing if there is an owners manual supplement for vehicles sold in "Cooperative Economic Countries" as Ford refers to that region.

I wonder of the dealer recommendation of 10W30 is based solely on that is what they carry.

Certainly is.

There's an American market copy of the manual, which lists 5W-20 as a requirement. There's an Arabic version of the manual, which lists 10w30 as recommended, and there's a supplement in English which lists 10w30 as recommended and that it overrides the 5W-20 required in the main English copy of the manual.

OP is in Kuwait, it's gets pretty darn hot there. Stay with the M1 0W-40, should be a great choice in your situation.
