10w60 vs 20w50 oil consumption

So my Capri runs on 20w50,it burns some oil because the valve stem seals are old and have never been changed, until I replace them I've been thinking to use Valvoline's VR1 10w60 synthetic blend the next time I change the oil , do you think it would burn more or less oil than with a 20w50, I would guess that it would burn more oil when cold but less when its up to temp?
 
I'd guess the same as you on the 60 leakng less when hot. Maybe try some maxlife until you can change the seals?

Try Selenia HPX 20w50. It helped few times with older cars, it really reduce oil consumption significantly. Recently friend made an OC in a Nissan Almera. Oil consumption went down from 0.8 l/1000 km to about 0.3 in one OCI.

If you want to go with Valvoline than use MaxLife, it has similar additives as HPX.(in terms of sealant treatment).

Steady there, ease yourself into it with the Penrite HPR 40 which is 25W-70. It starts a bit easier...
 
I think for this application, given the fact that you are in Islas Baleares, whatever semi/conventional 10w40, 15w40, 15w50 would do just great. Really easy on oil engine.
 
I went from a 15w50 to a 10w60 in an old alfa once. Hot climate down in S.America. (had very low hot idle pressure)

Engine loved the stuff (Castrol TWS). It did burn less.
 
Why is it that we always hear about cars burning oil really bad in other parts of the world where they use ridiculously thick oils like this?
 
It's a band-aid measure, when you can't afford the parts (& labour) to do a real repair. And new (even second hand) cars are way too expensive. So you throw in the thick stuff to keep it going as best you can.

I think it's more a reflection of the local economy or personal finances than anything mechanical.

A good thick band-aid oil should also be priced well to reflect the reason it's being purchased and who is likely to buy it. Even Penrite say their 40-70 oil is for old clapped out pieces of junk (they put it more diplomatically than that).

Oh, and no annual smog testing is also a requirement.

Do you drive cars from 1975 like OP's Capri on 0W-20 in your part of the world?..

where exactly do you hear that ?

In Australia, a car that eventually gets to 1L/5,000km is considered a gross burner that needs intervention...1qt/1,000 miles being "normal" on a "new" car is an entirely US concept to the rest of us.

20w50 is what Ford specs for this engine.... and it's what i'm going to keep using, my engine by the way has good compression and hot oil pressure is ok and was ok even back when i ran 10w40 and only got a little low on the hottest summer days when it has 40c ( 100F) Outside. You may think 20w50 is ridiculously thick because you are in the US and you drive a car made in 2000... and if you are implying these oils cause wear you are wrong

It comes from the manufacturers. Who in Australia is dictating that policy?
 
In Australia "thick" oils are common and what most people prefer due to the scorching heat they have during the summer , i've heard of people running 25w60 or Penrite's 25w70 in the same engines as the one i have in my Capri and they've told me it did ok

Because when I see posts on here from Malaysia, back East, Africa, Australia, it seems that a lot of those posters have issues with oil burning, and they're already using really thick oil
