currently running 5W30 in my altima, have ran that grade in it since i got it. manual says 5W30 is best for all temps but 10W30 and 10W40 can be used above 0 degrees. it tends to get really hot down here in south lousiana during the summer so would it be wise to switch to a 10W30 or 40 or should i just stick with the 5W30?

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 Works great my brothers car loves it, i run it 8000 miles and it still looks new.

Been putting 10W30 in my bro's '02 Altima, last time was some of that FAR QS Torque Power 10W30 syn that I had lying around, he ran that for 7000+ with an OCOD (!), looked good coming out, he's got Synpower 10W30 in it now, another dang OCOD, told him to go to AAP & get a P1 next time! Think you'll be fine.

which one is best for yr round use, like why does the manual recommend 10W30/10W40 if they state that 5W30 is best for all temps? i just want to use whats best for my engine

How often does it get below 0F in LA? I just used it in my brother's because he's cheap & wanted to try a synthetic oil-which I figured it's enhanced cold flow properties would make up for it being a slightly higher weight. I don't think you'll hurt anything either way, just get something good & don't run the OCOD for over 7K like my brother does!

Either one will work fine. Just keep in mind though that most wear occurs during start-up and the higher viscosity index 5w30's will flow faster to the engine. It applies in the summer as well, most people focus on it for just winter. 10w30 will work though, I would use a synthetic for a slightly higher VI especially if you plan on doing 5K+ mile OCI.

I have an '04 w/2.5 L and I use whatever I have in my stash at that time/season.

But, deffinately 5W30 in the winter. I have used(but I don't make it a habbit) a mix of 5W20/5W30 in the winter with good results meaning no issues/noises and no UOA to substansiate anything. But have never used 5W20 alone.

In the summer I have used a combo of 5W30/10W30, 5W30/10W40 or 10W30/10W40 without issues/noise or lack of throttle responce. I have never used the 10W40 alone but I have used 5W30 alone and 10W30 alone.

If you want to use one oil all year'round, my suggestion is to use 5W30 and call it a day.

There is no question that any of my vehicles are quieter/smoother on heavier wgt oils but, at a slight loss of MPG

5w30 will be the most well rounded oil for MPG, smooth/quiet and protection. 10W30/10W40 makes my 2.5 quieter at idle only.

If all I wanted to do in my Altima was tool around town, didn't care much about MPG and wanted the quietest/smoothest that you can make an Altima engine(metz-a-metz) then, I would only run 10W40 or 15W40(summers) and 10W30(winter)
