hello...recently traded my motorcycle (Suzuki S40) on a almost new scooter (Genuine Hooligan 170i); I wasn't fond of that moto and prefer scoots...I will have no need for a jaso ma or ma2 oil since there is no wet clutch; the 'spec'd oil' is 15w-40 jaso mb...essentially diesel oil; many owners/shops will use 10w-40 motorcycle or scooter oil; the oci (after break-in) is @ 1800 miles;

the Hooligan is a '22 with 150 miles when I got it; there is no dedicated oil filter...ordered a magnetic drain plug kit to isolate the ferrous metal bits; selling dealer did oil change & rear differential fluid change...in went belray 10w-40 conventional motorcycle oil & belray 85w-140 gear oil; I have already put nearly 350 miles on (still in break-in phase) & plan to change fluids between 500-600 miles to get the junk out; want to do another change at 1000 miles...

thoughts on using 10w-40 conventional pcmo for the upcoming oil change? since the oil change will be short I would rather not spend money I don't need to...

Hello there fellow scooter enthusiast!
Thank you for confirming that I'm not the only one in the universe who actually prefers scooters over motorcycles.

That Genuine Hooligan 170i is a great unit and will serve you well! One of its engine-cousins (Buddy 170i) has been featured on YouTube with over 25k miles with basic maintenance, and still running as good as new. And there are more people on forums and FaceBook groups pushing 40k-70k miles on these engines.

As far as oil - If you already have 10W-40 on hand, then use it. But if you have to purchase - HDEO 15W-40 may be cheaper to buy and has better additive package than a similarly priced PCMO 10W-40. I run HDEO 15W40 in all my scooters, with zero issues to report. Current oil of choice is Mobil Delvac 1300 15W-40.

I'm always on the lookout for one of cousins of your Hooligan, trying to score a cheap one of these:
- Genuine Rattler 200i
- Kymco Like 200i
Basically same thing as Buddy or Hooligan, but in a different outfit. They definitely got it right with that fuel injected 163cc engine. Well balanced, efficient, and super reliable! (Yea, it's only 163cc, despite the 170i & 200i wordplay in the name.)

A quart of Rotella T4 is always available at my local Walmart for cheaper than pretty much anything else. Easy choice for me. Could even buy the gallon and use it for 4 oil changes.

Doesn't sound like you purchased the oil yet. Buy a gallon jug of Rotella in the weight you want, you've already said you're gonna change the oil twice within 1000 miles. That leaves enough for two more changes, assuming around 1 qt capacity. 👍

yep...understood; had several Buddy 125's; biggest difference...Buddy series scoots use a dedicated oil filter which thoroughly cleaned the oil while the Hooligan does not

My PCX is the same, a majority of sub 250cc scooters are also. These engines aren't as refined as car/truck engines and are ok to run with the simple screen.

It's the main reason to keep on top of oil changes. Oil choice really isn't as important as interval in my onion.

it's a scooter without a shared sump...no wet clutch...you can go ahead and use PCMO all day long! It's a glorified lawnmower engine! Scoot on, brother! (I have a 96 Helix so I understand the love for scoots)
