10k snuck up on me today so I checked the oil

Just changed out 0W20 RGT after 5,000 miles on my Tundra. The oil was definitely dark and looked used and I put some very easy miles on the truck. There is some old-school Ti 0W20 Kendall GT-1 Max in there now but I do have about 8 quarts 0W20 Mobil EP to use at some point. Hmmm....decisions, decisons....

I dont think the oil has anything to do with being clean after 10k. The oil filter maybe, the air filter definitely. Maybe the additives that keep dirt in suspension are worn out and they all fell to the bottom of the pano_O.

Not surprised. Back in the day, my 04 Corolla spit out good oil every 7500 miles. My GDI 2.0L Ford is not so bad either. Perhaps it’s down to driving style.

Fully expecting the oil to be dirty and perhaps a little down.

Nope. Looked like it JUST came outta the bottle. Oil level spot on just like 10k ago.

14 Tundra 5.7 130k

Filter: Fram Ultra
Oil: Mobil 1 EP 0w20 and one bottle of Mobil 1 0w16 bc I'm stupid and grabbed the wrong bottle.

MPG is consistent at 17.1

Mobil 1 continues to amaze.
17.1.

Good mpg for a Tundra.

The modern day so called efficient engines destroy the oil, they run terribly rough during cold starts, noiser, cake the intake valves and also cake the exhaust outlet.

2005 Toyota (160hp 2.4L/ 4 speed auto) feels torqey especially from stop, glass smooth engine and averages 22MPG of mostly city driving. Keeps oil and everything clean.

2015 Kia (204hp 6L T-GDI /6 speed auto) noisy clatter, especially cold starting , kills the oil, feels sluggish from dig, although faster overall and averages about 22MPG only when driven conservatively despite being 10 years newer!

I tend to agree. I’m in heaven right now with my port injected 2016 Toyota V6, because my previous two other cars were direct injection. I experienced the following with one of them...almost a fish bite feeling when driving at first. Like the feeling on a fishing rod when the fish is biting. Then it’d go away when it was warmed up...low speed pre ignition? Not sure. I also experienced random misfires and fuel trims were off. I experienced oil consumption, oil smelled of gas (sometimes) and the oil was always much darker much quicker.

Having said all that^^. One of those cars I took to 179,000 miles before the oil consumption just got to be too much. And the other I traded it in at 50,000 miles, so I’m not sure...perhaps it could have lasted me 300,000? I just don’t know, but it sure didn’t feel like it.

I get 18 mpg to 20 mpg all day long on my 54 mile hwy drive to work every morning. Windy cool day? 18 mpg. No wind, warm day? 20 mpg easy. Of course, Tundra is bone stock...I don't put all that crap on it (lift, super big tires, bull bars, etc) that others do and then ***** about the terrible mpg results.

Either the Mobil 1 is impressive, or the Toyota 5.7 is a good engine.

I suspect it’s a bit of both...
