I've got about 3/4 million miles in vehicles over the years using Fram filters. I've never had a known issue and never worn out an engine. I'd say more than 1/2 of those miles were on the Extra Guard and it's equivalents.
Ya but they dont want to hear that on this site....
Good then pay me.. I will use them...since 1968......
I would like to know what specifically makes them junk.
I wonder if Fram cartridge filters are made with top shelf media. Media quality is so hard to assess.

That's your opinion. OK; you're allowed to have one. Perhaps you can elaborate why you feel this way? Be specific, please. The word "total junk" isn't really definitive or helpful in expression other than a general derogatory implication; it lacks merit without justification.
Sure, some examples of Frams have not been stellar. But poor quality construction is not unique to Fram EG filters; we've seen lots of examples from every major brand, and it is not a stretch to say that even premium brands are suffering quality wise these days. Secondly, the efficiency of the EG isn't bad at all; 95% at 20um. Some other brands can't even claim close to that level of filtration.
I've primarily used Fram, Purolator and Wix the bulk of my adult life. I've yet to personally get a bad one. But that does not discount the experiences of others. Nor does it make these brands the "best" any more than it makes them "total junk".
What concerns me is the general decline is perceived quality in all the brands; the filter market is not faring well IMO these days.

Several part numbers are made in South America. They may have top shelf media, but the construction is poor. Leaky seam. @wwilson has posted a few.
They always come out looking great from my Jeeps.
I had a 2006 Pontiac Solstice with the 2.4 Ecotec. That was the first cartridge engine I had. Purolator filters would come out with the media looking frayed and scraggly...fibers sticking out of it. I switched to WalMart and Fram basic filters and they never did that. I have not run an Extraguard yet on my Pentastars, because I bought a load of Mobil 1's on clearance a few years back. Some were $4 each and some were $2. But I bought 14 or so of them. I had already bought a stash of Fram Ultras, so I have probably six of those. But I might put a couple Extra Guards in there. I have two Pentastars, so eventually, I'll get through them.
Interesting note. I know the M1 filters are good enough, but I think the Extra Guard will outperform them. The Ultras usually show a little better on insolubles in the UOA's I've done, compared to the M1 filters. The cheap Extra Guards advertise significantly better filtration than the M1 filters and are not far off of what is advertised for the Ultras.

I recently showed some examples of the EG and FE; virgin samples of cartridge filters for my Lexus. The quality of the EG was really impressive; even pleats, strong caps, solid adhesion with even glue application.
I used to dislike cartridge filters, but now I prefer them, as I get to inspect the filter media prior to installation.

Let me guess...you're a "Purolator only" type of guy (?)
Some people on this forum that just love to bash FRAM....When they see it has fallen out of site on the posts they post a new one just to keep bashing....I remember the orange can of death comments...but please show me of all the engine failures that have happened because of using a FRAM oil filter and all of the law suites against FRAM for just that.....Please post them so we can all see how many you find...

It looks to me similar in construction to the US-made version of Extra Guard 10358 (smaller cartridge for smaller Toyotas)---which is remarkably similar to the Walmart version. Besides the US version and the Argentina version, there's also a China version of the Extra Guard 10358.
Only the outer edge is that thick. It wraps around the ends of the media, I assume to help hold it in place.

You could probably use almost any brand for cartridge filter and it will Usually look as good. Cartridge filters are like underwear models. They don’t let the ugly ones be seen without their clothes on.
