10 yr Auto loans....yikes!

In Canada mortgages are "recourse mortgages", and have been for decades. If you turn in your keys and walk away from your house, the bank will sell it for what they can get and if they don't recover the full amount of the mortgage, you will owe them the difference.

In the US in the past there were "non recourse mortgages". That means if you walked away, the bank would get what it could for the house, but you owed nothing even if it couldn't sell it for the full amount of the mortgage. That was hard on the banks.

I understood that all changed after the last housing crash. Mortgages in the US are now apparently "recourse mortgages" just like in Canada. If that's true, it will no longer be possible to just walk away. There would be ways out of the debt of course (eg repayment proposal, personal bankruptcy) but it's no longer simple.
Depends on the state in the U.S.-and depends if you took out additional loans( and when)on the property in other states. (You need to read the whole page)

10 year loans will not work on EV as the batteries in alot of those vehicles will be shot before then and car will become worthless. IMO
needless to say, Tesla started 10Y loans with their T model introduction back in the day!

Do you actually know anyone who has done this?

In Canada most (or maybe all) mortgages are life insured. When the borrower dies the mortgage is paid off. You'd have to be pretty dumb to provide a 30 year mortgage to an 80 year old, or be the insurer who is agreeing to pay off the mortgage when they die. If you know a lender who is actually writing a lot of these deals there may be a lot of money to be made by selling their shares short.

I think it's a great plan - for the borrower. When I get to be 90 I'll buy a multi-million dollar house with a life insured mortgage. When I croak (if I croak) my estate will get the house - tax free and fully paid. All I'd have to do is make the payments for a few years. And hope I don't live too long.
Doesn't work that way in the US. A couple of things.

No 1 the 80 yr old still must be able to afford the payment. 80 yr olds typically aren't bringing in a lot of money every year. So the houses are relatively inexpensive which makes them easy to sell.

No 2: The value of the home won't change all that much when the borrower passes away in 5-10 years.

No 3: Insurance would probably be viewed as some form of age related credit related discrimination which is illegal

Yes-and the prediction is California will have a fleet of 60% EVs in the future. SO California sets the clean air example and 13 other states have those standards-so we will see what the EV mandate brings.....
....brown and blackouts as the grid fails to sustain. Remember when gasoline prices fell stupid low a few years back? Well people started to drive just to drive because it was so cheap. Well, you get enough NEW EV owners that will want to drive and charge because it's new and trendy and put that with the ones out there already and I see a backlog of charging stations and during the summer possible blackouts. I'd rather see Natural Gas ⛽ really take off. Love propane, better to cook with and we had an abundance of it as a untapped resource

Do you recall when problems have solutions? And problems not being permanent? California is committed to EV's. Not only will they work it out, but in order to meet to their own mandate they have to. Will it be on their initial time frame? Maybe not.

Every EV post on this forum has objections and/or problems. But yet no one mentions they will be solved-in time.

That's what I see-as someone who spent 50 years of my life in California. After all-they solved the clean air issue-didn't they? And 13 states followed their example.

California will work it out as long as other state send them electicity.

Truer words have never been spoken. We have moved beyond "thick vs. Thin". To debt bad....very bad. New cars bad....very bad. Lot of pent of frustration around here.
BITOG: where other people’s finances are none of your business, unless you don’t agree with the choices.
Thats why we are baling out banks in California.

The audience that still asks question: does it come with transmission dipstick?
The 2024 3500 Ultimate Denali doesn't have a transmission dipstick, but I think the engine oil dipstick will fit down the ATF fill tube.

We need a new thread topic; I did everything right. Worked hard, drove a beater and a month after I paid the house off the ol' lady filed
for divorce and took everything.

My favorite is when the depreciation police come out to throttle the idea of a new vehicle purchase. No mention of the higher cost of ownership on trucks and SUVs though. Also seemingly absence on boat, RV and other toy topics.

Brand new Camry - depreciation is bad - you could be investing that money. Used Tundra to commute and pull a boat - it is nobody’s dadgum business - this is still America ain’t it?

Good times.

I ordered a 2007 335i coupe in Oct 2006. Since I truly could take it or leave it, I got $1800 off list which at the time was about as good as it got, since no dealer in the nation had one in stock. The BMW portal was so bad back then, my car was black sapphire all the way through being loaded onto the ship. It arrived space gray as ordered....it's still in the garage btw...
E9x 335i, a very nice car. Hope the N54 has been more reliable for you than most, lol. Great engine despite its flaws.

I bought my M2 comp new because the used prices were just not dropping to a level that made sense. I’d rather pay an extra 5k to know exactly how the car was treated from day one.

I feel the same way, maybe when I get a little older I won't care. I want to break the car in, be the first person to detail it [I make sure the dealer knows that, and remind them before I take title to the vehicle]. I want to dump the FF early, change the transmission fluid early, along with the differentials and transfer case, etc. if equipped. All the things that drive some people here nuts. ;)
