Just got an older murray lawn tractor, it has a 10hp briggs. Am changing the oil on it(imagine that!) It came out black and thick! I was going to just run 10w30 Supertech oil in it, but got thinking. Should I throw some AutoRX in it? What would you do to clean in up inside? It has great compression.

I would change the oil and see how long it stays clean. I would be more concerned about how often the air filter was changed or cleaned. Check the air filter and change the spark plug. Remove the cover from the flywheel and remove any chaf or dirt that collects inside the engine cooling fins and or has built up on any part of the block. This will eliminate hot spots and help the engine last longer. If this engine does not burn oil do yourself a favor and put Mobil 1 in the crankcase.
I drained it and put in 10w40 Maxlife. I was even thinking of putting some 15w40 syn. Amsoil I had in my garage....

the cover for the flywheel it keeps hands away from the fins, that and it is for cooling as well. the flywheel is in the center, spins all the time the engine is running for cooling, spark, alternator, the cover is a thin metal thats held on by about four bolts for a single cyl. ten. you'll have to take the starter gear cover off first before taking the shroud off. maxlife will do good, Mobil 1 as well, use Mobil 1 myself, briggs engines just run good on it. i'd also pop the head off, and clean out all of the carbon in the combustion chamber while you have the shroud off. as for cleaning it up inside.... you can use AutoRx to clean it up inside, mmo, etc.
I just picked up a 10 hp Briggs powering my generator. The manual says to use Synthetic after the 5 hr. breakin on 30w non detergent. It even said if you use a multi weight dino type oil it will use oil. So I put in S2K after the 5 hr. breakin. My neighbor bought the same generator and after reading that he too went with the Amsoil 5w30 I had in my stock.This is the first time I ever read a manual telling the owner to go to synthetic over dino.
