I have a 4.6 2004 Explorer and 5.3 2005 Silverado. I drive around 15k per year on each and have been using Amsoil SSO in both with 1 year OCI's for the past several years. Even though I do think this is the best oil on the market, the price of other oils are so much less now I'm considering doing 6 month OCI with Syn-Power, PP, M1 etc. I only want to use synthetic and I started using Amsoil because it was the cheapest way to go with a 1 year OCI. Right now I figure it's the same price either way so it comes down to what is better for the engines. On a side note I've been thinking about switching the 4.6 to 0w/5w30 and using one oil for both engines. 5w-20 has worked fine but the Explorer has a on/off oil pressure gauge so I really don't know whats going on in there. Open to all facts and opinions!

M1 EP is rated 15K mi or one year, can get 5qt jug on sale for $25 or so... I use the 5w30 flavor in my two Ford 4.6 for 1yr, though don't exceed 8-10K mi...

Now what was the question again???

Hopefully you are an Amsoil preferred customer and are getting the lower prices; their 0w30 has given me great UOAs. Have you done a UOA on either of your vehicles?

If you are thinking of a less expensive oils, don't forget Amsoil's OE and XL if you plan on 6 months; their prices are comparable to M1.

I haven't been to mallwart for awhile; are Synpower, PP and M1 really less than 1/2 the price?

It really is half the price. I'm a preferred customer but freight puts it back to $10/quart and the filters are a bit more. Haven't sent in oil before and my current 10k oil in the pan has some M1 added so it would be a [censored] blend.

Depending on the UOA you might be able to take any of the oils mentioned out to a year(except Synpower, from reading here it's not a good extended drain oil). I think all of them will easily go 6 months/7500 miles.

i use 5w20 in my modulars and change it every 6 months or 7500 miles. i also use either my bulk i have at the shop or whatever i get the best price on.
i tell everyone that we rebuild for what weight to use the brand is up to them it has to be sm gf-5 in most gas engines

I forgot to mention that in the 5.3 engine before 15k the oil pressure starts to drop with SSO. Goes from 38/55 to 25/45 at idle/2000 rpm's. I don't know if it was shearing or the filter or what. I have been using Amsoil filters as well. Amsoil said the filters may get filled up but it doesn't affect pressure, I should have sent that oil in last year. One less thing to worry about with 6 month OCI's.

If ur vehicles have oil life indicators, perhaps u can use them. If not, then 6 months should be fine with any synthetic oil 5w30 and 5w20

My opinion is the same, the OE product line cheapens the Amsoil value and its comparable to oil sold in local stores. I'm not fond of ordering motor oil due to rising freight costs because it makes Amsoil an expensive oil to use. I believe their product is awesome and well worth the money, but I no longer drive very much and no need for the best oil out there. I am looking at going with Rotella T5 10w30 as an alternative.

Your wasting your money on a 6 month low mile UOA. If you don't believe me just browse the UOA section. If your lazy i can include a link for a long time low mile UOA. Not trying to be a jerk, but unless you are looking for coolant or other contamination i would hold off and UOA later like 1.5-2 years.

I am lazy but I do drive around 15k per year and drive in powdery dust every weekend. I'd rather change oil once or twice per year instead of my miles or OLM. Maybe I can sneak out a 1y year OCI but only Amsoil warranties an extended drain in severe conditions right.

Once a year with Amsoil SS sounds about right at 15,000 miles. The dust should be well controlled by oil and air filtration. What type of air filter do you use and what intervals? Do you have a restriction gauge for air filter?
