Since Redline oils are group V esters has anyone tried adding 1 quart of redline to their dino to "clean" the engine? Did it work or am I crazy? One of the guys at work says that is the best way to clean an engine. I think he is hosing me so to speak.

As I posted in the past--motor oil is supposed to maintain it's own cleanliness and not to "clean" others.Because of that, adding a qt of Redline isn't going to help at all.

I agree with ToyotaNSaturn that AutoRx works well in "cleaning".

Supposedly ester will have a cleaning effect. I am thinking that a higher concentration may be better, like 2 quarts, but best would be a whole load of Redline.

When posting this I already knew I was going to get pelted by the autorx "Moonies". My question is about adding a quart of redline to dino because of the cleaning effects of ester based group V oil. The reason being 2 qts of Redline is 1/2 the price of a bottle of autorx. The fact that group V oil wil have scrubbing effect on engine internals is already proven whether you believe you claim to know what it is "supposed" to do or not.

I would think so but I just want something that will lightly clean. I have read lots of bad reports by guys who switch to 100% redline in a vehicle with 100k of conventional. They get leaks. Most recommend weaning the motor off conventional 1-2 qts at a time.

Sometimes you have to pay more for the proper cleaning. Auto-Rx works! Anything else is just a guessing game. I would venture to say that if one or two quarts of Redline did work, there would be some success reports here.

I've never read any engine-cleaning news on Redline here. I've been channeling oil-related threads here almost everyday now for the past three years.

If you want it done right, then dig deeper in your wallet.

I have added a bottle of RedLine many times for that reason. It adds moly, is a better lubricant and if it does a bit of cleaning along the way..what the hey.

You'll have to search but there are posts where people have tried to use a quart (or a full charge) of Redline in hopes of cleaning and have had essentially no result. Perhaps if used continuously for a long period of time it might have some effect. But as pointed out, it is not designed or formulated to be a cleaner.

At the same time, there are people who have used ARX (which *is* designed to clean) and have had little or no cleaning results, while others have had phenomenal results.

Last edited:
1: perform full ARX treatment with a PAO synthetic and 1 quart of RL.

2: perform rinse phase with mobilclean 5000 and 1 quart or RL and a maintainece dose of ARX.

3: repeat steps 1 and 2 until engine has reached desired cleanliness level.

4: dont let the engine get sludged again by switching to a better oil than you had originally.

If you think a quart of Redline will clean your engine you are sorely mistake. Our Outback ran Mobil Delvac 1 and Redline 5W30 for quite some time. They are known for keeping an engine reasonably clean. Then I RX'd it. Should have seen that oil and filter.

How can you say that? I have not seen this information. Proof please?

I9said "supposedly" because I have no proof, nor know of any proof, but I believe some of the experts here will agree and that the folks at Redline would also agree. I think you will need a whole crankcase full to really do any cleaning and then maybe more than one OCI. I just ran a full load of Redline in the Aerostar for 7000 miles (15 months). Will see if the blotters look any cleaner now that I am off the Redline. Not exactly proof but would be suggestive.

I just saw a post where Bruce381 said that a calcium containing additive will do some cleaning ("Calcium, in oil", in the Additives forum):

So if I bought a calcium based detergent that claims to clean all engine parts, it is actually removing and suspending sludge? Am I right?

To some degree, CA sulfonate is used in Industrial rust inhibiting oils and will also nutralize acids and help to suspend and clean sludge/varnish in a PCMO.

I believe an oil like Maxlife can clean your engine because it has extra calcium and whatever other cleaning agents Valvoline folks put into it. I do think Maxlife is going to take a long time, many OCIs, but unless the engine is badly sludged and a threat to chocking its own oil lines with crud, I don't see a need to hurry to clean it.
