Until about 2003 the 1zzFE (1.8) was an oil burner because of sticking rings IIRC....Toyota fixed the issue and it became a long lasting and reliable engine. The Toyota 1.8 from early 2000s and the k series 2.4 from the same time period
I agree with your statement.Until about 2003 the 1zzFE (1.8) was an oil burner because of sticking rings IIRC....Toyota fixed the issue and it became a long lasting and reliable engine.
The Honda k24 is a notorious oil burner with stuck or clogged rings as well. Great engine. Easy to maintain and work on otherwise.Until about 2003 the 1zzFE (1.8) was an oil burner because of sticking rings IIRC....Toyota fixed the issue and it became a long lasting and reliable engine.
Had a 2007 with 386000 miles on it and did not burn oil or had stuck or clogged rings either... Best Honda engine I ever had... My 21 HRV has the 1.8.. It is OK but not much power... I wish the 2.4 was in it instead...That was a great engine...IMOThe Honda k24 is a notorious oil burner with stuck or clogged rings as well. Great engine. Easy to maintain and work on otherwise.
There‘s both in my family, my son’s ‘07 Accord K24, and three 1ZZFE 1.8s, ‘06 Matrix, ‘07 Matrix, my ‘07 Corolla-none of them burn any oil between OCIs! The Corolla just cracked off a 302 mile workday subbing for the Transit (getting new brakes), another 38 MPG mostly highway run with me & around 500 pounds of tools, refrigerant, & parts evenly distributed throughout. 167,000 miles now, still running pretty much perfectly.I haven't owned either engine in a car before but I am genuinely curious if you had to pick an engine you preferred which would you take? Any short comings with either engine?
How are they dinosaurs? Both had variable valve timing, DOHC, and PFI. Carbureted OHV 4 cylinders, those were dinosaurs! At this point they are both dinosaurs, but there were also many iterations of them.
To me, modern engines have GDI, maybe a turbo, dual VVT, cylinder deactivation, etc.How are they dinosaurs? Both had variable valve timing, DOHC, and PFI. Carbureted OHV 4 cylinders, those were dinosaurs!
Lots more stuff to break, I got it… Like my brother’s ex’s 3 year old 4 cyl., GDI, turbo, oil burning Equinox! To me, modern engines have GDI, maybe a turbo, dual VVT, cylinder deactivation, etc.![]()
