I just bought a new 09 Yaris 5dr, lb. to replace the oil burning, transmission slipping 02 Golf. Its a great little car.

but,,,,,,,

I was browsing through the owners manual and found that Toyota considers a motor that burns 1qt of oil every 600 miles acceptable. This seems absolutely outrageous to me. Does anyone know if the Yaris burns excessive amounts of oil?

i believe the owners manual is referring only to oil usage during engine break in. the manual to my 05 celica says the same thing.

I know several people that own Toyota Yaris/xA/xB/Echo and get their oil changed at my shop. I recommend 5,000 mile changes with conventional and the oil is barely dark when they come back except for one guy. I swear he thinks his xB is a race car. Oil come back pitch black every time. None of them report oil burning.

I didn't think anyone actually read the owners manual anymore.

That would be funny if it did burn a quart of oil every 600 miles. Compensates for any "ultra low emission" systems that it has in place.

I have a 2007 Yaris Hatchback, 1.5L engine. Currently have 58,000+ miles on it. The engine has never burnt an oz. of oil, not new, and not now. I run 0w-20 during fall/winter, and 0w30 spring/summer. The dip stick just before oil changes shows 100% full.

this is due to the V.V.T.I. . The '07 PRIUS we had is basically same engine and the owners manual quoted is due to lubrication . Forget the part , think it was for outtake . But is normal . Maybe someone here with a PRIUS can look it up in their OWNERS MANUAL and post the reason . ;- )

The YARIS , PRIUS and other TOYOTAs we have / had came overfilled with engine oil from the factory by at least 1/4 of quart or more . This could contribute to oil burning . Plan to drain the factory oil soon . Most likely next week at 1,000 > 1,500 miles and replace with a conventional . Either PENNZOIL or SHELL . Whatever's cheaper due to another short stint to help flush out the engine .

The service manual for my '07 Corolla (1ZZ-FE engine) says the same thing, but I don't think the owner's manual says it. I think it's simply Toyota's corporate limit for oil consumption. Most manufacturers are 1 qt/1000 miles. I guess Toyota's is 1 qt/600 miles. It doesn't mean that every car will do it -- that's just what their upper limit is before they'll investigate into a problem.

My Corolla has never used a measurable amount of oil either.

The old 1.5's used in the Tercels were oil burners when they got some miles on them. AFAIK, the newer 1.5's used in the Echo and the Yaris don't have oil buring problems. Oil consumption shouldn't be an issue...

If you go looking for my UOA's on my Yaris, you'll probably quickly conclude my Yaris sees some of the worst abuse possible.

And it doesn't drink an ounce.

Well...

It is in Canada after all!

That's pretty bad abuse.

Lead-footed girlfriend, ice-cold temps, 90% of our trips are under 2 miles in the city, with complete cool-downs in between, etc. etc... Yikes!

The block heater helps, but not much. We'll see if the battery heater and the oil pan heater can do us any better!
