I have a question or two. Is it possible to formulate a 0W40 synthetic CJ-4 oil with a pour point of -87F,HTHS OF 4.04,AND A VISC. index of 179 from a group III basestock? Can/has it been done?

Sounds like it has! This is a trick question, no? I dont think many straight PAO 6 even have PP below -87F. Also dont put too much faith in pour points. Visco-elastics are solids when stressed and cold flow like a doused Wicked Witch when relaxed. Use the CCS or MRv #.

You got me. I was confused because Petro-Canada claims to use nothing but 99.9% pure hydrocracked group III. Sounds like it's got something else in it to me.

You're right, they DO claim that. I think it's in OVERK1LL's thread on PC 0W-20/0W-30 that he called them about Duron-E, and they said the basestock was all PAO with some Ester in it.
If you look at their datasheets, I 'think' all their full-synthetic HDEO's are PAO based; while their blends and PCMO's are group-III. This is going by the PP's for the different oils.

That seems to be a serious oil. You don't hear much about them way down here though.

A place we have up here called Home Hardware lists a huge amount of oils on their website. However, if they actually stocked everything they listed, they'd need half a Walmart's worth of floor space for oil alone. I haven't been in a Home Hardware for a few years. I'll have to check and see.
At least there are a fair number of bulk suppliers near me. It makes getting Delvac 1300 much easier.
