What is the difference between Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 0W20SP and 0W20SN Plus engine oil? Is the SP an older designation? I tried a Google search myself and was a bit disappointed at how little information there seems to be out there on this (full disclosure, I am not the most computer savvy person, and certainly not an engineer!). In my limited search, It seems it may have something to do with the newer SN PLUS designation being developed for turbo engines (?).

I'm interested to know if I can safely use the SN PLUS oil in my 2024 Nissan Frontier in which the manual recommends the 0W20SP. I don't know if SP PLUS is an "equivalent" designation to SP.

P comes after N in the alphabet, and SP is the newest.

If I had SN Plus, and manual calls for SP, I'd use the SN. It will be fine.

SN Plus and SP are very comparable, I'd use SN Plus where SP is recommended without hesitation, just don't stock up on that oil if servicing a car calling for SP.

From API SN+ to SP, a timing chain wear test was added, and certain existing tests were made just a bit more stringent (piston deposits, LSPI, fuel economy). It would be fine to use for an OCI, but since you have a new vehicle with a warranty, you might want to stick to what's recommended in the manual.

API SQ is a new standard that's being released next month, and that would also be fine to use since it's backwards compatible with API SP.
