0w20 in a new Toyota

Hi everyone,

Just bought my wife a new Sienna, and this thing specs 0w20 oil. Not a big surprise to me considering that 0w20 is only available in full synthetic and that Toyota specs 10,000 mile OCIs with this oil.

I was thinking that they spec'd this oil primarily to force the use of a full synthetic, as it's much harder to screw up 0w20 than specify a fully synthetic 5w20 for the average operator. I got a GREAT deal on Quaker State full synthetic 5w20 last month, am I going to create any adverse effects running this oil instead of 0w20? For 10,000 miles?

This won't likely be an issue for another year or two, as like all other new Toyotas this one came with a 25,000 mile maintenance plan which I intend on taking advantage of.

Also does anyone know of a good place to get a good 0w20 oil reasonably priced? Wal-mart only seems to stock the 5-quart jugs of M1 in 0w30 instead of 0w20; I'm having a tough time finding 0w20 anywhere!

Advanced Auto occasionally has a $29.99 deal that includes 5 qts of Mobil oil and a Mobil 1 filter.

I would stock pile when such a deal comes along again.

Get the 0w20 from the dealer. In Canada it's priced reasonably at around $5/quart and it appears to be a very good oil.

Regarding 10k mile OCI's, be darn sure the dealer is putting the 0w20 syn in there if you're going to run it to 10k. Regarding the 5w20 Quaker State Synthetic, no problems at all. I would expect the Quaker State Synthetic to be as sturdy as the Toyota 0w20. Use it with confidence and enjoy that beautiful van! I want one

The main advantage of the Toyota 0W-20 over the Quaker State 5w20 is the Toyota's superior start-up performance.
At room temp's it's 30% lighter than the QS and a full 50% lighter at 0C.
So it depends on how you drive. Lots of cold starts and short trips will favor the Toyota oil. Long drives with few cold starts will minimize the advantage.

Toyota's 0W-20 is available in bulk now from Toyota and Lexus dealers so try them first. The only other readily available low vis' high VI 0W-20's are Honda's version and Castrol Edge 0W-20.

Doesn't the new Sienna use the same 2GR engine? Does that mean my previous generation 2010 Sienna 2GR-FE will run 0-20 when it specs 5-30? I know Honda just retrospec'd a lot of vehicles for 0w-x, so that'd be cool if anyone had info. on that.

Definitely! I'd like to see more diesel engines available in general.

Big oil does not want diesels on the road
they make it difficult to buy
and charge more for it

Also AZ has good 0-20 oil and filter specials from time to time. I always get Mobil 1 5w20 Extended Performance that way.
