2004 Honda Odyssey 3.5 litre V6 (J35). Currently running Mobil 1 5W-30. 58,000 KM, run like a top.

My wife drives this vehicle and does not have a plug-in at work. I live in Canada (Saskatchewan). Low temperatures are common in the winter. -35C this morning for example.

I am thinking of switching to a motor oil that might be a little better for cold weather starts. 0W-30 XD3 and Mobile 1 0W-40 are two I am considering. Both have pour points lower than the 5W-30 Mobil 1 I am currently using. Any thoughts?

Ignore the pour point, as it's really not a useful way to determine how an oil performs in the real world. It's the cold cranking numbers you need to look at.

You're better off going for Mobil 1 0w20 (if you can find it in your area) or if not, M1 5w20 or pretty much any synthetic 5w20.

In Canada we can get Petro-Canada Arctic 0w-30. Its a synthetic motor oil made for Canadain Winters. Just go to a Bulk station and ask them for it. I live in Alberta and just put in some Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 in my Hemi Truck. It was -29c last night and it started no problem. I was considering using the Artic 0w-30 but then I got the PP on sale at Canadian Tire for $22.

Canadian Tire has Motomaster 0W30 and Quaker State Winter Blend 5W30. Not sure of the exact cold stats on those, just throwing out ideas. Castrol 0W30 is on sale this week at CT too.

Mobil 1 0w-30 is no longer much better than Mobil 1 5w-30 except when you get down to and below -35°C.

A 0w20 synthetic would be best, followed by the PetroCan 0w30. And any synthetic 5w20 would be better than Mobil 1 5w-30.

0W-30 XD3 still "gels up" when it gets below -20 C.

My car (2005 Toyota Matrix) turns a "little" easier on those cold mornings start ups(with XD3)compared to Mobil1 5W30.

I don't think I'm revealing anything off-side when I say that Terry Dyson advised me that XD3 0w-30 has too much phosporus for this engine design.

He was commenting on an XD3 UOA of my wife's Acura 3.2TL v6. PP would be a very good choice though.

Listen to Patman. If you don't want to use a 20 weight the best 30 weight would be the Mobil 1 EP 5w-30. The 0w-40 is really not as good in cold weather as most 5w-30 oils. I love the 0w-40 but I live in North Carolina where 30 degrees F is considered very cold.
