Cartridge or spin on- I've found info indicating it is a cartridge but then many parts lookups show a spin on...???

Was gonna change the oil and filter in my son's Vibe this weekend but can't determine WHICH kind of filter it has...

Car isn't readily accessible to me until I go to do the work.

Anyone know for SURE and if there are any special tools needed to access the cartidge housing, if thats what it is?

I checked with the ACDelco website, and it appears the 2.4 has a standard spin-on filter, and the base 1.8 engine uses the cartridge.

RockAuto also shows a spin-on for the 2.4, but they do not yet stock any filter for the 1.8.

I went to two Pontiac dealers in two different cities today to get a filter. None to be had.
One sent me to the Toyota dealer down the street, their parts guy was such an idiot I left. He repeatedly kept telling me the Vibe uses a different engine, it isn't a Toyota engine, blah blah blah. What a doofus, this was in Augusta Ga if anyone is unfortunate to need anything from those guys.

Finally got a dealer with a clue, he looked up the filter via the VIN and it does use a spin on one but he didn't have it. GM had ONLY ONE in stock in the whole region, WTH the car has been sold since Feb 08!
No wonder GM is in trouble if their dealers can't even stock a freakin' oil filter for the cars they sell.......

I bought an 08 Scion and that tire size had no current MFG's so I was lucky I didn't blow one out. Nothing they do ceases to amaze me anymore.

FleetFilter.com sells the Wix filter for your car: the 1394, for $4.04+shipping. If you have a Napa store nearby you can also get one there. If they don't have one, they'll special order you one and usually have it there by the next day. If you plan on keeping the car for a long time, buying a bunch on FleetFilter would be the way to go! The Purolator for your car is the 14477. Fram doesn't have one listed yet. And yes, it is indeed a spin-on.

Yep I found a number of crosses for it now that I actually got a filter in hand to see what it was...BTW the Pontiac dealer ordered the ONE available in for me and it was over $10

Opened the box and there sat an OEM Toyota filter

The car is my son's and wasn't at my house to look at so a lot of the confusion was dealer ignorance and parts books not yet showing the 09 Vibe. But now I know what to get for next time
