My OEM fogs have slightly higher wattage bulbs (45 vs. the OEM 37W) and the plastic melted. They never worked well anyway, so I was thinking about better "true fogs" to install in the same location.

I don't want HID's or LED's. I'd simply like a housing that provides a nice low fog pattern, with a better light, and won't melt.

I'd also like them to remain on with the high beams. But, that's about impossible with the stock wiring harness.

Any suggestions?

Please use fogs only when they are actually needed.

Those Micro DE's are legitimate fog lamps in a sea of cheap junk available out there...way better than your Ford OEM fogs were as well.

Duh, missed 5" fogs in the header. Micro DE might be too small for you. You would look at projector-style Hella lights.

The problem is that the majority of the legitimate fog lamps out there are large, at least 6 inches in diameter to properly collect and project the light properly in the desired beam pattern. That's why a lot of the fog lamps out there are simply not good and some are mere toys.

The projector style lamps overcome the size obstacle and are used on the tight fit applications found in a lot of the vehicles today.
