Agreed.

I used a bunch of oils since it’s one of those oil users. All synthetic 5 to 6k at first, then ran a fram ultra oil filter and since I was adding oil so much, I went to 10k.

What engine? And how much oil does it use?

What's the oil consumption problem with these?

2.4L. Close to 2 quarts during a 5k run. There are tons of info on this years engine. My 06 Tc has 127k and never uses oil.

Did you determine if the oil is going past the rings or the valve seals ?

Do not forget to check the PCV system .

What was the reason you pulled the valve cover ? Looks pretty clean .

Best of luck with it .

Looks good

Pulled the cover to change the gasket. PCV was changed recently. I’m guessing rings, since it’s the year they where having problems with oil consumption.

Yep. I would maybe try a piston soak but I'll bet that will do nothing.

Clean as a whistle, not the original owner. Very nice.

Do a compression test on it , both wet and dry . This will give you a good idea if it is rings or valve seals .

It's the rings, Toyota was re-ringing these under extended warranty.

A BITOGer was buying one of these and then was surprised by the oil consumption, it could have even been the OP. I am not sure if he got it fixed by Toyota, but I am almost certain someone on this board has.

It's a known problem caused by the oil squirters in the pistons getting sludged IIRC. I will bet that is why this engine is so clean, because the PO and the OP changed the oil often to try to avoid this problem.

Back when I was a young pup , 1 quart every 1000 miles was considered no big deal .

Expectations have changed .
