08 Mazda 3- Which Tranny fluid to use?

Hello. My mazda 3 has the 2.3 l engine, and has the 5 speed manual transmission. I auto-x the car, and do a bit of lapping, as-well as commute 180km a day. currently the car has 86,000km.

So im replacing the transmission fluid. I went to Canadian Tire, and picked up 4 quarts of motormaster full synthetic 75w90, gl5 oil.....but then I noticed they had semi synthetic that was gl4.

IS there a difference between gl4 and gl5? I tried going on the website to find the oil I bought, but I cant find it.

Can I use the full synthetic gl5, or do I need to use the gl4? I dont have the owners manual to refer to unfortunately.

You`ll want to use the GL4 for your manual transmission. GL5 is for rear differentials on rear wheel drive cars.

Don't put GL5 in that transmission - some transmissions do require GL5, but yours does not.

Take the GL5 back and get the GL4.

Manual Transmission Fluid 75w90 is fine, but "Gear Oil" 75w90 GL-5 will eat your Synchro's.

Most manual transmission fluids will be labeled as such or be labeled a "Synchromesh" fluid.

GM, dodge, and ford (also mazda), use anything from ATF, Synchromesh to standard gear oil. Make sure you know, what goes into your transmission, before you kill your Synchro's.

Edit: FYI some manual transmission fluids are GL-5, but they are different from standard gear oil GL-5.
